Value and Conclusion

  • The Straight Power 10 CM (Cable Management) 800 W retails for $169.90.
  • Delivered full power at 46°C
  • Efficient
  • Silent operation at light and medium loads
  • Good ripple suppression at +12V
  • Close to 1% load regulation on the +12V rail, and a load regulation within 1% on the 5V rail
  • Low inrush current (combined with 17.5 ms hold-up time)
  • Optimal power distribution between the four +12V rails
  • Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) fan
  • Long cables
  • 5 year warranty
  • High MSRP
  • 3.3V performance in the Advanced Transient Response tests
  • Given its price, I expected Japanese caps (instead of Taiwanese caps)
  • Increased ripple for a short period during the last turn-on transient test
  • Single EPS connector
  • I would like it to have flat, all-black cables instead
be quiet! worked with their favorite OEM, FSP, for another time, and the outcome was good overall. The new Straight Power 10 unit I reviewed today performed well, with a tight-enough load regulation at +12V, pretty high efficiency levels with both low and normal loads, and good ripple suppression on all rails. This product's key features are its silent operation, in which its high-quality FDB fan which will last for a long time plays a key role, its compact dimensions and nearly fully modular cabling design. Probably due to a tradition or something similar, be quiet! insisted on keeping at least the ATX cable native. I strongly believe most users would like a fully modular design instead. Another EPS connector would also be a welcome addition since units of similar capacity usually come with a pair of these.

FSP seems to have mastered the ACRF topology, and these new designs offer good performance along with increased hold-up time and low inrush current to finally meet other modern topologies eye-to-eye. However, the most crucial advantage of the ACRF topology is its reduced cost in comparison to other topologies as it takes fewer components to achieve its high efficiency, though the unit still has a pretty high MSRP. The competition at this price point is ruthless, and things won't pan out as expected if the unit is introduced into the US market at its current price, which would be a real shame. I expect be quiet! to adjust this product's price to something a bit more customer-friendly, which would allow users who need a good and silent PSU to include it in their shopping list.
