Value and Conclusion

  • The 2 GB kit of the Cellshock DDR3 1866 MHz sells for just under 280 €.
  • Works at minimum voltage at rated speed
  • Can run CL7-7-7-12 at rated speed
  • Plenty of room to overclock - 2 GHz should be possible at CL8
  • Can run over 1333 MHz at CL5
  • Runs at over 1700 MHz at CL6
  • CL8-8-8-16 timings are tighter than the competition at the same speed.
  • Well priced
  • Single sided memory
  • Memory ICs are covered by thermal paste
  • Blue aluminum heatspreaders looks sleek
  • Lifetime Warranty
  • Sticker included
  • Still more expensive than high speed DDR2 1200 MHz CL5
  • Limited availablilty in the US
  • May need special motherboards to perform best
  • Packaging only displays one memory module
This Cellshock memory is finally a valid reason to switch from DDR2 to one of the new high-end DDR3 based boards. The fact that a P35 board may be pushed to the limit and cannot really unfold the possible speed of the Cellshock memory is an obvious sign that the new generation chipsets like the NVIDIA 790i or Intel X48 are what this memory needs. The memory should run great on any board that can handle 500 MHz FSB. The benchmark results speak volumes. While it should be mentioned that DDR2 1200 MHz CL5 should translate into DDR3 2400 MHz CL10, Cellshock is well on its way to finally break the strong hold of DDR2. The prices have already dropped steadily and should continue to do so in the future.
