Cooler Master Xport 251 Review

A Closer Look

Taking a closer look at the enclosure itself, there is not much to say. Cooler Master has chosen to keep its dimensions as compact as possible. Thus, there are no extrusions or other design elements present. Both sides are solid, with one sporting the Cooler Master brand name. There is a large white sticker with the unit's serial number on the side. It would have been nice if Cooler Master could have used a black sticker instead, as the white on black looks quite ugly.

The understated theme continues when viewing the Xport 251 from the front, as there is nothing on this surface either. Turning it around we have a single mini USB port.

Assembly

To gain access to the enclosure, simply remove two screws. You may then pull out the rear, plastic cover along with the PCB. There is a JMicron controller hidden under the quality control sticker. I was not able do decipher the actual IC, as the label was not legible. Needless to say, you will find JMicron ICs in pretty much every 2.5 or 3.5 inch SATA based enclosure on the market these days.

To insert the drive, simply plug it into the connector on the small PCB, then add the two rubber spacers to either side of the drive. This is followed by sliding the entire contraption back into the Xport 251 aluminum shell and securing it with the two screws.

Once connected, you will see a small, understated blue LED light up near the USB plug. Cooler Master has not placed an LED in the front of the Xport 251, as it would have increased the overall dimensions of the enclosure or possibly raised the total cost.
