A Closer Look at the Backrest
The chair's backrest is pretty tall at 83 cm (32.67 ") and comes reinforced with a solid steel frame for better support of the pelvis and to minimize tension on the back. The backrest is 50.5 cm (19.88") wide, which, along with its increased height, seems enough for users who weigh up to 120 kg (264.55 lb). As already mentioned, the backrest has contoured edges that help users sit in an upright position. These contoured edges, which follow the exterior border of the backrest, also come in the black and orange colors of the company logo.
Cougar states that the upholstery uses special high density foam, but we have no further details on the density or type. As such, we can only say that while the cushioning appears to be adequate and comfortable, it does also feels sturdy enough. The chair's frame is covered in it evenly, and none of our testers complained about touching the frame after even several hours of use.
Two openings have been placed at the top of the backrest; these feed into the sports bucket design. Since Cougar includes a complimentary neck cushion, its straps go through these openings for a secure hold across the rear.
The upholstery that covers the Armor S is made out of PVC pleather which tries to imitate the texture of real leather, and the stitching is orange or black to go with Cougar's logo. The backrest is covered in a diamond stitching pattern.
The company name and logo are embroidered in orange stitching along both sides of the headrest, front and rear.
The backrest reclines by up to180 degrees, and one does not have to be afraid of dropping out of the chair or flipping it over!
The backrest's angle can be adjusted from 90 to 180 degrees with a lever on the right side of the chair, at the seat's base, which is more than enough for even a real nap!
Tilting resistance can also be adjusted to one's liking with a knob under the seat's base. By turning the knob clockwise, you can either loosen or tighten the tilt.
The two plastic bits on both sides of the backrest fit into the overall design nicely and seem to be of good quality, while the two screw cups that cover the bolts on the plastic bits of the backrest are a nice detail as well.
A Closer Look at the Seat's Base
The seat's base is comprised of two parts: the centerpiece and contoured edges. The contoured edges are raised a bit, but not to where users would feel confined, mainly due to the seat's width. The overall seat's width is 53 cm (20.86"), and its depth is 50 cm (19.69"). It is wide enough for the maximum weight Cougar specifies and does have the depth for it as well. The seat's cushioning feels superabundant since the foam is 15 cm (5.9") thick. Seated, it feels almost like a comfortable couch. You do not sink into the Armor S by much, though, since it keeps its original shape. It looks as though the seat's base keeps its original shape by evenly spreading the weight across its entire contact area.
The main part of the seat's base is black and adorned in the same black diamond stitching design as on the backrest. The raised edges feature two colors, orange and black.
Under the seat's base are two elastic bands which, along with the steel frame, offer sufficient support and comfort for users of up to 120 kg (264.55 lb).
Almost at the rear of the seat's base, exactly under the plastic bits and the backrest's recline lever, is a multi-functional lever; it is responsible for all height adjustments and the lock-in and release function of the backrest's recline. How far off the floor the seat is can be adjusted from 36–44 cm (14.17–17.32"), which makes the Armor S a valid option for a lot of users, whether tall or short.
Armrests
Adequately long and wide, the two pre-installed armrests are comfortable. The armrests are 50 cm (19.68") apart, which looks to be right on the mark for this chair's dimensions. The height of these armrests can be set from 64–72 cm (25.1–28.34"). The armrests seem to be sturdy and well manufactured, made to last, and are 4D, which means they are adjustable in four different dimensions; backward and forward, left to right, up and down, and clockwise.
Hydraulics
The metal class-4 gas lift cylinder is responsible for all height adjustments. These height adjustments feel smooth, and reclines are effortless. No matter how much a user weighs, the chair reclines with ease all the same.
Five-Star Base and Caster Wheels
The five-star base is black, out of metal, and has a matte finish. Since it is made out of metal, it probably will last for many years to come, and it will easily endure Cougar's specified weight limit. Lastly, the caster wheels are made out of plastic and look like miniature sports car wheels.
Support Cushions
The Armor S comes with two complimentary cushions; one for neck support and another for lumbar support. Both cushions are black and covered in PVC artificial leather, and both have an orange-embroidered logo and company name.
The smaller cushion is for neck support and has snap-on attachments that go through the openings of the headrest, snapping on to the rear of the chair.
The larger cushion is for lumbar support and features two snap-on attachments that latch on to the rear of the backrest, which means it can be moved up or down for a better fit. Having both cushions in place, it feels as though the smaller cushion has a different filling than the one for lumbar support.
