Value & Conclusion

  • The 16 GB (4x 4 GB) Crucial Ballistix Elite 3200 MHz kit is available for US$139.
  • No LEDs
  • Ballistix M.O.D utility (temperature reporting)
  • Nearly all-black to match almost any motherboard
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Large heatsink can interfere with some coolers
  • Performance impacted by small 4 GB per DIMM size
  • No LEDs
The Crucial Ballistix DIMMs are crazily huge and heavy black modules that are poised to take some abuse should you so dare. With built-in temperature monitoring over a custom app, the Crucial Ballistix Elite modules offer something very few other sticks if any do, which might beg the question of whether we really need thermal monitoring now even though we never had it before. I don't exactly have the answer to that question. At least their relatively simple looks have them blend in pretty much anywhere.

The memory chips used to build these particular sticks I have, being single-sided, don't exactly offer the best when it comes to performance as you'd likely expect, but offering 3200 MHz out of the box is pretty fast as is. You just need to decide if thermal monitoring is something you want to have. You might want to opt for the slightly slower, but larger 32 GB 3000 MHz version instead.

I'm left sitting here looking for some LEDs or something. With so many other brands now having bought into the LED craze in a big way, I was left hoping to find some in one of the sets I've looked at recently since Crucial was one of those brands that did offer sticks with LEDs in the past. So those of you looking to run away from all the LED madness can keep looking over here as the Ballistix brand becomes its own company. Bought a set and need some help setting it up? Let me know in the forums!!
