The cable that ships with the DUNU x Precogvision Mirai is a special white variant of the DUNU DUW-02 cable, whose updated version (DUW-02S) impressed with the VULKAN. The white, which is more an off-white but not cream, was deliberately made as a special cable just for the Mirai but otherwise is functionally identical down to the use of DUNU's excellent Q-Lock PLUS system of modular connectors that feel more secure than most other such implementations on the market. It does result in a bulkier connection, especially with the right-angled housing you may want to account for in a pocket, but works beautifully in giving you the option of 2.5/3.5/4.4 mm connectors as seen above. The conductor is silver-plated OCC (Ohno Continuous Cast) copper in a 4-strand Litz Type-1 wire configuration and the sheath has a matte finish to the touch. It doesn't feel or measure thicker than the stock brown DUW-02 cable but ends up being slightly stiffer owing to the different material/dye/process used. It's not the easiest to shape/re-shape either but thankfully doesn't kink up randomly and behaves well once in place. The housing and splitter all use aluminium housing given a brushed finish and the cable employs a simple clear plastic cinch which works as expected. There are pre-formed ear hooks on the IEM side where we see 0.78 mm 2-pin connectors on housings which have L/R markings to help identify the left and right channels, respectively. These connectors have an extension meant to be used with recessed connector spacings in the IEMs themselves and the metal plugs on either end are gold-plated for oxidation resistance.
There's not a lot of information available about the design of the Mirai shells although it doesn't take a genius to confirm the use of resin in a light green color. This pairs well with the stabilized wood face plate which in green is not the easiest to manufacture consistently. It looks even better in person than the photos suggest and I dare say many would also postulate the face plate reminds them of jade jewelry, especially with the swirls and a mix of light and dark creating a slight 3D effect. I understand DUNU and Headphones.com originally discussed having the face plate be a green and white mosaic to match the product box and accessories better, especially given a render on the product page, but it was not deemed viable on top of the already complex all-green version here. That said, these still make a strong statement and can be eye catching when worn.
Here's a closer look at the face plates in action so you see what I mean above. The top side has a slight extension for a vent which thankfully juts out enough out of the ears to not cause any comfort issues unless you have the world's deepest concha. I also appreciate the seamless attachment of the glued face plates on to the shells here with extensive polishing done by DUNU. The Mirai is a thick set of IEMs though as evident from the side views where we also see recessed 2-pin connectors in a white cover plate. The inside has "DUNU" and "Mirai" printed for branding and then we see a metal nozzle that is hand-fitted to the resin. This is less optimal for production compared to a 3D printed resin spout extending out the resin shells directly but seemingly the latter had a detrimental effect on the sound signature to where a metal nozzle ended up being the way to go. It's relatively long and is 5.2 mm wide at the very end—5.8 mm at the notch just before—with a metal filter on the end to help prevent contaminants from entering the acoustic chamber.
Fitting the various provided ear tips is easy enough because the bores of these ear tips are sized appropriately for the metal nozzle which in turn has retaining notches to help keep the tips in place. Seen above are all three stock ear tips in size M installed on the Mirai. Try out the various sizes provided as well and keep in mind that both ear canals won't necessarily have the best seal with the same size or set, either. You may also end up going for some aftermarket silicone or foam tips if none of these work for you or to try and get a different sound signature in the highs.
Regardless of which tips you pick, the next step is to connect the cable by carefully identifying the matching channels and orienting the ear hooks around your ear when connecting the IEMs. Doing so is simple, as you just push the 2-pin connectors in place and they remain there via a friction fit with the recessed connector also helping to an extent. The stock cable with its longer connector housing, which isn't angled either, might result in the cable jutting out further than you might like though. Likewise, I am not convinced going for a white cable with these green IEMs was the best use of resources—especially since the white version of the DUW-02 cable is stiffer than the original. You then select the source connection you wish to use based on the amplifier of your choice. The stock cable being modular provides excellent compatibility with pretty much all portable DAC/amps in the market.
