Initial Setup

As we get into the overclocking section later on in this review, it becomes apparent why a XOC overclocking oriented motherboard is paired with this memory. Here pictured we have the ASUS Z790 APEX next to the lovely G.SKILL memory. Each memory kit comes in two color variations; Metallic Silver or Matte Black. As seen in the photos, the black version was sent as a review sample from G.SKILL, although the Silver variant probably would have matched better. Nonetheless, RGB illumination here is excellent and individual LEDs are hard to spot from any viewing angles or color setup. Normally, having a brand name or logo on the light bar can be distracting, which may upset those who prefer minimal product names and logos inside the case. Here however, at these higher frequencies, it's more of a badge of honor and conversation starter for onlookers.

Enabling XMP Profile

The G.SKILL Trident Z5 DDR5-7200 memory kit had no stability issues during the testing phase. Though, it should noted that this kit is only validated by G.SKILL for Intel 13th Generation Processors and vetted for certain Intel Z790 based motherboards (G.SKILL QVL List). After testing a few Z690 motherboards with this 7200 MT/s memory kit, support will nearly non-existent because very few are officially validated to support 7200 MT/s by the motherboard manufacturer. Pairing this memory also with an Intel 12th Gen CPU and a Z790 motherboard instead is also unlikely to work either. This is because the Intel 12th Gen CPU internal memory controller (IMC) limit falls anywhere between 6800 MT/s and 7400 MT/s using voltages that are good for daily usage. This is of course per CPU, such that, a working guarantee blanket statement is not possible due to the silicon lottery. In this instance, it is ideal to follow the guidelines set by G.SKILL and/or the motherboard manufacturer QVL lists in question for best chances of success.
