GIGABYTE Aivia Touch Charge Neon Presenter Mouse Review

Performance

On the Table

On the table, the Neon does alright for such a tiny mouse. It is quite comfortable to grip and its button placement seems alright for a small dual-purpose mouse. The laser sensor provides good enough performance as a small non-gaming mouse, and its 1200 DPI resolution seems plenty. The ergonomics are a bit odd, especially if you plan on using this mouse on your desk for longer sessions. The M555b from Logitech is much better here, but that mouse lacks all the presenter functionality of the Aivia Neon. If you have large hands, you will not be able to grip the mouse with as much comfort as normal, portable mice. Since the Aivia Neon has been designed to work as a presentation device as well, many compromises have been made, and some have impaired comfort greatly.

Off the Table

Getting the Neon off the table and into the air, using the gyroscope to control the cursor on the screen, has the design immediately make much more sense. You grip the mouse with four fingers, leaving the thumb free to manipulate the main and well-placed buttons south of the scroll wheel. You have to press the side button in order to activate the gyro but that is pretty easy as well. The control while in the air is well above what I would have expected of such a solution. It is stable but not annoyingly slow and the button layout is surprisingly easy to get used to. This is definitely a neat device with some unique features for anyone doing a lot of presentations.

Driver

GIGABYTE ships the Neon with a small yet useful driver suite. The driver just gives you three on-screen controls that let you draw as you present, which is quite useful and definitely good to see on a presenter mouse. The driver system seems a bit beta-ish as you cannot navigate through the different options using the, for instance, scroll wheel. You are forced to maneuver the pointer to the bar to select what you want.
