Overclocking
Just a few days ago, AMD introduced a complete overhaul for their drivers called "Adrenalin 2020"; we used this driver for all our testing and overclocking.
Overclocking in Wattman feels MUCH improved over what I encountered on RX 5700/Navi 10. The driver crashes less often when overclocking, and the card is also able to sometimes recover from overclocks that are too high.
With manual overclocking, maximum overclock of our sample is 1860 MHz on the memory (6% overclock), which is limited by the adjustment range in Wattman. I suspect the chips could go even higher, but for some reason, AMD chooses to artificially limit overclocking potential of their cards. GPU overclocking, on the other hand, was close to the maximum range available, but I couldn't max it out on my sample.
Maximum stable overclock was 2035 MHz Boost, which increases average GPU clock from 1836 MHz to 2029 MHz (11% overclock).
Testing notes & interpretation- Overclocking results listed in this section are achieved with the default fan, power, and voltage settings as defined in the VGA BIOS. We choose this approach as it is the most realistic scenario for most users.
- Each GPU (including each GPU of the same make and model) will overclock slightly differently based on random production variances.
- The data in this table shows comparable overclocks, using identical conditions, from previous TechPowerUp Reviews.
Using these clock frequencies, we ran a quick test of Unigine Heaven to evaluate the gains from overclocking.
Actual 3D performance gained from overclocking is 8.3%.
