In Win Glacier 900 W Review

Value and Conclusion

  • The In Win Glacier 900W has an MSRP of $215
  • Tight voltage regulation at 12V and 5V
  • High efficiency even at very low loads (60-100W)
  • Very good ripple suppression
  • Numerous connectors including six PCIe and two EPS ones
  • High external quality
  • Only 40°C rated (however it worked flawlessly up to 43.1°C during our tests. We didn't try it at higher temperatures since the lack of OTP combined with excess operating temperatures could be fatal for the unit)
  • 3.3V failed in the second Advanced Transient Response test
  • Not the quietest fan we have ever heard
  • Ripple spike of over 70mV at 5VSB
Not considering the 40°C max operating temperature, this PSU has all the necessary ingredients to compete even against mighty opponents like the Corsair AX850 and Antec HCP-850. Its advantage is that although it has under 1 kW capacity it is equipped with six PCIe connectors (and two EPS at the same time) while only the latter of the two aforementioned PSUs supports the same number of PCIe connectors. Clearly the Glacier 900W is a big step forward for In Win in the high-end power supplies market and the seven years of warranty show that the company has great confidence in their product.
Despite the weak 3.3V rail, which is of little importance in modern systems, the Glacier left me very satisfied with the tight voltage regulation it exhibited at +12V and 5V, the excellent ripple/noise suppression, its high efficiency even at loads below 100W where all large capacity units are usually crippled and finally the numerous cables/connectors it provides.

Surely In Win has an ace up their sleeve with this unit and if they play their cards right, meaning if they manage to keep the retail price close or even below $200, then they will hit the competition really hard. Bottom line, if you want to efficiently power up to three high-end VGAs then you can safely trust your money on the In Win Glacier IRP-GOL900.
