Value & Conclusion

  • The Lexar Professional FireWire 800 CompactFlash Reader will set you back $99 US Dollars or around 70€.
  • Fastest reader for your home computer
  • Great build quality
  • No additional power required
  • UDMA cards will really benefit from this reader
  • Two cables included
  • Can be daisy-chained to further units
  • Stackable
  • Well packaged
  • Expensive
  • Not the best choice on the road
  • An ExpressCard 34 UDMA part will perform better
The Lexar Professional FireWire 800 CompactFlash Reader is certainly a unique product. It takes a very fast interface and gives you the ability to access your UDMA cards with ease. A great built quality and the possibilty to daisy-chain & stack multiple such card readers make it the one and only choice for those professionals with a lot of large, fast cards. This brings me to the next point. Lexar is not marketing the unit under the "Professional" series by coincidence. It is, simply said, the fastest CompactFlash reader out there for your desktop, without having to resort to ExpressCard via PCI-E controller card. The performance of the card reader can thus be considered great, while the big downside is the fact, that it was not the fastest out there and that the price is sure to tear a hole in your wallet.
