ASUS ROG Ally Optimized Settings

Note: the gameplay video above is captured with an AVerMedia X'Tra Go GC515 dock/capture device, which doesn't affect performance in any way. What you see is what you'll experience on your device.

On the ROG Ally, things are much better regarding average performance but not as good with 1% and 0.1% lows. We found that no matter the settings and resolution you select, you'll notice intermittent stuttering while web-slinging and gliding around the city. ROG Ally's VRR screen somewhat softens the blow but doesn't fully remedy the issue.

That said, with the right combination of settings, resolution, and upscaling, you should get a pretty steady 30 FPS experience with highs in the low 60s.

First of all, set VRAM to 6 GB. Next, we recommend using 720p resolution without upscaling along with the "Medium" preset. Then, set the "Weather Particle Quality" option to low. The said option snags back a frame or two during certain fights that feature tons of sand, which doesn't sound like a lot but is crucial in preventing drops to below 25 FPS during those fights. During our testing, those sandy fights were the only instance, along with the aforementioned stutters while web-slinging and flying, where the frame rate would drop below 30 FPS.

The game looks more than decent with the "Medium" preset applied at 720p. Textures are detailed, LOD is high enough for Ally's 7-inch screen, and the lighting and ambient occlusion give the game a nice dose of contrast. On the flip side, tree LOD isn't that high, and you'll often see trees changing to more detailed meshes as you approach them. The same applies to vehicles and crowds, which often pop into existence relatively close to Spidey.

You can drop textures to "Low" to reduce stuttering, but you cannot completely remove it even if you use the "Very Low" preset and manually set the "Traffic Density" and "Crowd Density" options to "Low." That said, using this settings combo makes the game noticeably smoother. If you prefer smooth performance over eye candy, feel free to use it instead.

You can enable FSR Frame Generation if you want, which makes the game look noticeably smoother in motion. The latency hit isn't as serious as on Steam Deck, but it's there and is perceptible. Playing the game with frame generation won't completely kill your Spidey sense and reflexes, but it does require an adjustment period before you'll be able to continue pulling off perfect dodges and parries. We decided to keep it off but if you don't mind extra latency, feel free to enable it.

Naturally, you should set TDP to 25 W or to 30 W when hooked to a charger. Alternatively, you can apply the same graphics settings but increase resolution to 900p and set the upscaler of your choice to "Quality." Personally, we prefer native 720p over upscaled 900p, but this all boils down to personal preference. You might find 900p with upscaling to look better.

Our optimized settings and TDP combo should give you less than one hour of battery life. Alternatively, you can set the power to 18-19 W, opt for the "Low" or "Very Low" preset at 720p, and get a pretty steady 30 FPS performance and about one and a half hours of battery life.
