Matrox TripleHead2Go Digital Review

Value & Conclusion »

Usage

For this review I moved from a single 24 inch monitor with a native resolution of 1920 x 1200 to three 22 inch displays, resulting in the maximum 5040 x 1050 pixel desktop area. Using the three units makes working with images so much easier. Matrox has made sure that programms do not span all three monitors when you maximize the application. This functionality is given for most programms, some however refuse to keep to a single monitor. For instance, Photoshop CS2 maximizes across all three units, while Imageready CS2 does not. Photoshop was the only application I found during the weeks of use with the TripleHead2Go, which did not properly work with the setup. Nonetheless, I never want to go back to a single display after using this setup for some time.

We have showcased in our TripleHead2Go Analog review, that surround gaming is a possibility. This holds true for the Digital variant as well. Many games span properly, with a 180 degree view, but I have yet to find a game, which manages 5040 x 1050 resolution. Turns out this is once again an issue with the NVIDIA drivers. As widescreen resolutions are simply not available in some games on NVIDIA GPUs, but present when using ATI graphics hardware. 3840 x 1024 is not a problem at all. I did not try a lot of games, but Crysis and the followup "Crysis Warhead" both worked incredibly well. The same goes for games like Bioshock. Timeshift and World of Warcraft. As far as processing power required to game at such resolutions. Crysis did not even manage 10 FPS, while Warhead was smoothly playable on two 9800 GTX in SLI. So you better make sure your PC can handle the large resolutions. Comparing a 1920 x 1200 resolution with the 3840 x 1024 yields the respective pixel counts of 2.304.000 and 3.932.160, so there is a lot more work to be done with the surround gaming setup.
