Privilege Settings


The Privilege Settings group allows you to set domain security, create new accounts or user groups, set access rights, and manage the NAS' shared folders. You can also set the quotas of these shared folders here.


Creating a new user and configuring his permissions is a simple procedure.


The options for creating a user group.


You will quickly familiarize yourself with these options since you will create new shared folders for users or user groups and edit access permissions on already existing shared folders often.


To allocate the server's storage space more efficiently, you can specify the quota each user can use. Users who have reached their disk quota will not be able to upload any data to the server so long as this function is enabled. By default, no such limitations are set.


QTS supports user authentication by local access-right management, Microsoft Active Directory (Windows Server 2003/2008/2012), and Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP).

Network Services


You should enable the corresponding option in this group if you want to enable file services for Microsoft Networking and allow access to the NAS on Windows networks. You can also enable Apple Networking and NFS services here.


QTS includes an FTP service you can enable here. You can also specify the port number and maximum number of simultaneously connected users.


All Telnet and SSH service options can be found in this menu.


The SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) service reports real-time events, errors, and warnings on the NAS to a PC with SNMP software.


The UPnP discovery service allows the NAS to be discovered by any operating system that supports UPnP. Also, Bonjour (zero-configuration networking) can broadcast a variety of services to Mac users.


The network recycling bin keeps all deleted files on the NAS. This may be handy in some cases, but you must be careful with this option if you delete large files frequently, as these deleted files may take up a significant amount of storage capacity. You can avoid such mishaps by carefully specifying how many days (1-180) deleted files will be kept in the recycling bin.


Qsync is a cloud-based file synchronization service exclusive to QNAP NAS users. You simply add files to Qsync's local folder to make them available on your NAS and all of its connected devices.
