Silverstone MS05 2.5" HDD Enclosure Review

Value & Conclusion

  • The Silverstone MS05 will set you back somewhere around 30€, depending on your local taxes.
  • Excellent Performance
  • Very compact but solid construction
  • Drive bay works well
  • Everything needed is included
  • Well packaged
  • High CPU utilization with USB 2.0
  • Plastic front
  • Drive bay does not have a cover - dust can enter freely
  • No external power supply included
  • Hard drive not well protected, in case of a drop
Silverstone has combined the advantage of a portable 2.5" based enclosure with the speed benefits of an internal hard drive. When at home, slide the MS05 into the included bay and use the fast SATA interface. If you need the unit on the road, pull it out and use the USB 2.0 interface to gain access to your files. This gives you the best of both worlds. Taking a look at the performance the MS05 manages to read and write files very fast with the use of the JMicron controller. Just the high CPU Utilization of ~15% is a bit high, and this did not change, no matter how often and with which computer it was tested with. Combined with a straight forward installation and a very well constructed chassis rounds up a well designed and mostly well performing product.
