Power Consumption
Let us now check on just how much power the DS416j needs in sleep, idle, and during heavy throughput.
We use a GW Instek GPM-8212 power analyzer for all of our power consumption measurements.
Sleep, Idle and Load
The DS416j's power consumption is bottom low, so you can easily keep it up and running around the clock.
Power Consumption in Standby Mode
Vampire power, or phantom load, is the amount of power a device consumes when it is switched off but still plugged into the power grid. According to the ErP Lot 6 2013 directive, vampire power should be below 0.5 W.
With much less than 0.5 W in standby if you disable WoL, the server easily meets the corresponding ErP directive.
Power Consumption Comparison Graphs
In this case, we didn't take the power consumption readings with the 500 GB HDDs (ST500DM005) we normally use, but with the two IronWolf (ST2000VN004) drives that were pre-installed. As such, the following graphs are only provided as a reference.
