A Look Inside

It's time now to strip down the NAS to figure out which components it hides inside its casing.

The center piece of the enclosure is solid aluminum, while the front and rear are made of plastic. It is very easy to dismantle the F2-220 as you only have to remove four screws around the fan grille and disconnect two connectors.

The small mainboard only uses passive cooling since the TDP of the Intel J1800 CPU is pretty low at 10 W.

At the rear of the mainboard is an empty RAM slot, which you can use to increase the server's RAM total to 4 GB. This slot is easily accessible once you remove the enclosure.

The heatsink that cools down the CPU is wide; however, it isn't terribly tall.

The RAM that ships with the NAS is soldered in place. The DDR3 packages are provided by SKhynix, and their model number is H5TC4G63CFR (4Gb DDR3L, 1.35V).

The system's flash memory actually is a Sandisk USB flash drive with a capacity of 8 GB. It is installed to an internal USB port.

We spotted three VRMs close to the CPU's heatsink. Those VRMs use a total of three pairs of QM3006M6 and QM3004M6 FETs and six polymer caps, provided by APAQ, a Taiwanese manufacturer.

The monitoring IC is an ITE IT8772E.

Here is the battery that keeps the BIOS data intact when power is removed.

The Gigabit Ethernet controller is a Realtek RTL8111F.

On the mainboard are several Alpha & Omega AO4407 FETs. We also spotted a uP1561P buck controller.

Here's a piece of Winbond 25Q64FWS1G 64 Mbit serial flash memory.

The single PCIe port is occupied by the SATA card.

Here's the SATA card to which a couple hot-swappable HDDs or SSDs can be connected.

The cooling fan is installed onto a plastic frame. Its model number is A8025L12S (80 mm, 12 V, 0.1 A), and it is made by Yeehon International, a company we haven't heard of before. On the fan's sticker is Hong Sheng's name, a rather popular fan manufacturer.
