Storage

Disk Information allows you to monitor installed disks, see their S.M.A.R.T information, and perform a Bad Block scan. There are unfortunately no power management options for the HDDs, so you can't opt to activate sleep mode. All attached external disks will also be displayed on this page.

RAID Management lists all existing RAID volumes and allows you to create new ones. You can also perform a few operations on existing volumes, including the expansion of a volume or setting of a global hot spare. Put a tick into the Quick Raid box in step #3 if you want to create a new RAID array fast by skipping the HDD checking procedure. Doing so will speed things up considerably.

These are all the steps you have to follow to create a mirroring RAID 1 array.

If you only use a single disk and want to install another, expand a RAID volume, or just use JBOD, you will have to delete all the data on the disk, which is a great shame.

File Sharing/Privilege

Local User Configuration allows you to add, edit, and remove local users, while the Local Group Configuration does the same for local groups.

This option allows you to add users or groups in batches, which makes adding a huge number of users or groups automatically easy.

This menu allows you to create and configure folders on your NAS storage volume. You can also delete shared folders, set Samba and NFS share options, and configure the folder and sub-folder Access Control List through the ACL menu.

You can set the storage quota limitations per user here.

Murphy's law also applies to NAS servers, so make use of this feature to back your users and groups up to another location, restoring them if needed. You had also better be careful with the restore function since all current users and groups will be replaced by the new data once the restore takes place.

Network Services

These groups of settings allow you to enable various network services, including Samba/CIFS, AFP (Apple Network Setup), NFS, FTP, WebService, UPnP, SSH, DDNS, and WebDAV.

Bonjour is Thecus's Hello Service. Thecus apparently forgot to name it correctly. Bonjour is Apple's name for the implementation of Zeroconf, a service discovery protocol.

One of the most convenient ways of giving users access to such required services as FTP, SSH, web disk, and http, etc. through the Internet is by enabling UPnP port management. You must confirm whether your router supports UPnP to set up this UPnP port-forwarding feature. Also make sure your router has the service enabled.

Enable Auto Thumbnail to automatically generate thumbnails for any photo(s) copied to the NAS, which will help users accessing these photo(s) with the T-OnTheGo application. But be careful: Addding a bunch of photos at once will slow this NAS down.

Thecus's ID menu monitors the server's DDNS status and allows you to log out of the service.
