Thortech Thunderbolt Plus 1000 W Review

Value and Conclusion

  • The Thortech Thunderbolt Plus 1000W retails for $239.99
  • Delivered full power at over 50°C
  • iPower meter device
  • Full Japanese caps
  • Double ball bearing fan
  • High workmanship
  • Compact dimensions
  • High price
  • Not great ripple suppression at +12V
  • 3.3V voltage regulation
  • iPower meter's voltage and efficiency readings are not accurate
I recently reviewer the flagship Thunderbolt Plus unit, so some comparisons between this unit and today's review sample will be made. For starters the lower capacity of the 1000W model allows a more relaxed fan profile, meaning that the fan's max speed, according to the iPower meter device, is about 300 RPM lower than the 1200W model. This is good news for the output noise which still exists but is not annoying, at least to my ears. The second thing I noticed was that in this case the Watt readings of the iPower meter are very close to the real ones, which I applied through my loads. In comparison, power readings on the 1200W model were way off. Unfortunately the inaccurate voltage and efficiency readings are present in the 1000W model, too.

While the Thortech Thunderbolt Plus 1000 W surely doesn't set new performance standards, in the end it managed to achieve fairly good results at all the tests I conducted, so I would classify it around the middle of the category. My only complaint is ripple at +12V where I would like to see 20mV less at full load and the loose voltage regulation at 3.3V, although this is a minor rail with minimal significance in a modern system

To sum up, if you like gadgets and want to know exactly how many DC Watts your system consumes, if you want a Gold efficiency 1kW unit with a great amount of PCIe connectors (eight), if you don't seek the quietest PSU of the market and finally if you can afford the high price then you should take a closer look at the Thortech Thunderbolt Plus 1000W.
