TOPPING D90 III Discrete DAC: Packaging and Accessories
By now I've opened enough TOPPING products to know what to expect, at least for its more premium line. As with the D70 Pro Sabre before, we get an all black two-piece box with a textured finish all around. On the front is the TOPPING logo in shiny silver, with contact information on the side. A sticker on the other side confirms the exact SKU inside, confirming that I have D90 III Discrete in silver color with a UK power plug inside.
Lift the lid to reveal thick foam protection on the inside for added protection and machined cutouts to snugly fit the DAC and provided accessories. TOPPING includes paperwork in the form of a card containing QR codes which lead you to a quick start guide, a more detailed multi-language user manual (
available online here), and warranty terms. We also get a printed guide on how to pair the included remote control to the DAC. We get a USB Type-B to Type-A male/male cable, which in turn indicates the adoption of Type-B connectivity on the DAC rather than the Type-C I would have liked to see in 2024. As expected from a more premium product, the D90 III Discrete is powered off an AC mains cable rather than another USB connection as with some more affordable entries, such as TOPPING's own E50 and E30 DACs we saw before, and this also indicates there is an internal power supply. The remote control is different from before, with TOPPING going for a Bluetooth control this time—hence the need to pair it to the DAC—although functionally it still has extensive control over many functions including shortcuts and navigation between I/O options, custom user settings, changing the display brightness, and so on. It is made of plastic and takes two AAA batteries that TOPPING does not provide in the box. Rounding off the unboxing experience is a Bluetooth antenna that plugs into the back of the device.
