Gainward 7800GS 512MB really a 7800GT

I thought I should let you guys know that Gainward is back, after a period of custom graphic cards their enthusiasm seems to have died down. But now they are back with a vengance. They released a few cards with double the memory, 512MB instead of the usual 256MB. But to top things off, they seem to have taken a 7800GT core and bridged it down to AGP. So this card does not only have half a gigabyte of memory, but 20 pipelines as well. They even top if off with some serious cooling from Arctic Cooling. So if you are looking for the fasted AGP card out there, you will need to grab yourself one of these.

If you AGP people really wanted to go crazy you could take off the 7800gt core and soldier a 7800gtx one on. Then overclock it to 7800gtx 512 specs. Voila! 7800gtx 512 AGP. :)

Too bad it's not as easy as it sounds, now does it?

You would have to have special tools... but I bet it would be possible. Not that I would recommend it... ;)

if that were possible, we'd be seeing OEM's for GPU's, graphics cards would be treated like motherboards, and have special sockets...it would be a whole different world

well there will be socket based graphic cards some day...I read about that a while back. Both NVIDIA and ATI are working on that.

Why a socket based graphics card and not just a graphics socket in the motherboard? that sounds more practical. Plus has anyone realized that I'm pretty sure the cores on the 7800GTX and GT are the same? And what really pushes the 7800GTX is the enabled stuff like the pipelines and the shaders.

And does anyone know where we can BUY them? I'd LOVE this card

That looks like it might be an interesting upgrade from a X800XTPE.

Will it be available in US/Canada?

lol don't know about that Quake2, seeing as how a lot of us AGP owners are eager to even slightly increase our power.

Actually there are quite some systems out there with AGP that could use a faster GPU. I'd say my system for example could get a serious boost with such a card. I don't feel like paying 400 euros for a card I'd have to replace at my next upgrade. Once it drops to 200 euros or so I'd buy one :)

pci express motherboards for socket 478 and socket t intel processors are very cheap, pci express motherboards for socket 757 athlon 64 and socket 939 are very cheap , you could buy a pci express motherboard and a x1800xt for less than you would just be buying that one card socket A aka 462 athlon xp /durons processors arent even worth keeping they totally suck.

AMDCamthink you mean socket 754 for AMD. Also, Dan I see one website saying it's only 230 euros but it's preorder.

sorry to bust your hopes...buts thats british pounds...

that is the cheapest in europe..none have them in stock...and the ones selling them are handling them just as they are suppose to be...the fastest AGP card out there...and thus are asking a premium for that kind of card. I just payed 490€s for my 7900GTX 512MB...and here ya have to shell out 400 for a 7800GT 512MB with the HSI chip (that could explain a small fraction of the costs...the HSI chip.)

pentium 4 prescott 3.2 ghz 800 mhz fsb HT socket 478 with pci express motherboard albatron px915p4cpro.

There's no excuse for anyone not having pci express i bought this motherboard for only 89$ like 6 months ago. Motherboards are very cheap these days. i think its just people being lazy and too scared to risk using another motherboard they act like its hard to put a pc together i can hook up any motherboard in my current case in less than 5 minutes.

msi crossfire motherboard 80$ after rebate up front cost 90$
thats 421$ cheaper than the agpx8 7800 gt 512 mb and faster
LOL that's awesome man thanks for the links. Don't know if the card converts into $800 (I have no idea what pounds or whatever you use convert into dollars) but then what does that one link I gave to dan converted into US? I'd assume about $300 right?

There is an excuse though, I wanted to keep my 6800GT AGP and not have to shell out $300 extra for a new mobo and card, so me getting a PCIe motherboard now is just a waste of time and money since I just bought my AGP board.

It isnt G71 that must have been a typo. In the next line it refers to it as G70, and it the picture that is definently a G70 core, not a G71 core.
