a lot of people who use their home computer for email, some videos and what not probably spend an hour MAX per day on their home PC. this looks like a pretty interesting product and will most likely be expensive and hard to upgrade but the people who buy it dont care about that. they have the money to spend. sony does research, determines that a product like this is worth developing based on what they know about the market, and they manufacture it. blast it all you want, but you are the nerd.
The true problem, as I see it, is that this product sits squarely between two separate groups of people: those who, as you said, spend only a few hours per day max on their computer, and those who are wanting a little bit more out of their computer but aren't quite up to geek standards. It doesn't hit either group. The latter group tends to play casual games which don't come in 3D yet, and if you're spending this much for 3D why not just get a PS3 which is already 3D capable?
As I see it, this product is for people who don't want the expense of a 3D HDTV but still want to try out 3D. As such it will most likely sell very well, but it certainly isn't going to find its way into my household.
I have an all-in-one iMac in my bedroom for space saving reasons. You are forgetting the people that very specifically want this type of footprint, but want a little more than what the typical POS all-in-one offers. If this was an IPS panel, I'd be all over it as an upgrade to mine.
