SteelSeries and Valve Announce QCK+ DOTA 2 Edition Mousepad

The first time I heard about mouse mats this size, I was like "dayyyem". 17" x 15" is seriously big man! Is a square mousemat really the way to go? I would have though a rectangle would be best.
