Leisure Suit Larry Kickstarter Ends With $673k

Apparently a remake of the classic Leisure Suit Larry is in the works. Kickstarter is being instrumental in bringing back games playing on nostalgia, from Tim Schafer adventure games and cyberpunk to post-apocalyptic RPGs and, ah, wank jokes. The campaign to fan-fund Leisure Suit Larry HD, a remake of Al Lowe's sleazy adventure game wrapped up yesterday at $673,602, having passed its goal of $500,000 last week. $655,182 was raised directly through Kickstarter, with the rest coming from Paypal.

While the Kickstarter's now closed, Paypal donations are still open so that total's ticking slowly upwards. However, LSL fell short of its second funding goal. Replay Games was gunning for $750,000, hoping to add new speech, puzzles, cutscenes locations, minigames, "girls" and more if it hit that mark. Still they got close, so one imagines Larry's adventure may be fleshed out a little.Leisure Suit Larry HD is coming to PC, Mac, and Android and iOS devices. The remake was actually announced back in October 2011, to be funded the regular way, but when that fell through they turned to fans.

CheeseballLOL, I hope those who aren't for the Kickstarter aren't really thinking that LSL was just for the softcore nude scenes. They were point-and-click adventure games that can keep up with the likes of Full Throttle, Monkey Island, and other LucaArts SCUMM-system games, even though the story's were stupid. :P
Oh, don't get me wrong, I played LSL. I played Wing Commander, X-Wing and FreeSpace 2 as well. I think we just differ on which series/genre deserves to see more daylight.

For example, I'm a fan of the excellent Longest Journey series, and I think those deserve a continuation (note: not a remake) much more than LSL deserve a remake. With rose-tinted glasses on, yes, LSL had occasional comedic value. I don't however think its story deserves to be retold, or offers anything at all to the current gaming landscape.

And don't get me started on how LSL can keep up with LucasArts games. Reminded me that Grim Fandango 2 doesn't exist while LSL HD Remake does won't lower my eyebrows one bit! :banghead:

I know some people really like that genre of game, but for me that game feels like phone sex with graphics and I`m not really into that. Never the less, glad they got the funding to make a new game.

There's a nice looking zombie game called Zombicide on KickStarter. As you know I am big fan of zombie games, movies, tv series.

If anyone like a nice zombie board game, this one should not be missed. I already pledge at Abom level and my reward is getting sweeter by the hour!

Were fun for me back when I was 10/11 years old, can say similar about all video games. People lack social skillz so they stay inside and game all day/night ;)

FierceRedI'm a big fan of Kickstarter, especially due to its tendency for democracy to choose whether a game gets made or not rather than "so how is it similar to CoD?" Publisher greenlighting.

And yet, despite the starry eyed hope I have for the financing model, I'm dismayed that something as childish as Leisure Suit Larry can manage to get over half a million when something like Starlight Inception gets shunned. I mean, seriously.

Lets think about this for a quick moment. In 2012, with various sources of titillation available everywhere on the Internet, a HD remake of a game primarily about navigating various mini-games and solving grade school level puzzles in the pursuit of some tits, ass, and possibly their twin sisters tits and ass, is getting more 'vote with your wallet' democratic support than the "rebellious stepchild of Wing Commander, X-wing and Freespace2".

What, did they need to add TIE Fighter to that list in order for people to care or something?

"Congratulations" to Tim Shafers, I guess? Still dismayed that if I ever need a fresh example of how Sex Sells, I just found over 655,000 new ones.
I didn't even know about that. Sad it's not going well. :(

It's about popularity I guess. That games should be popular but LSL is about sex so that will be more popular.

Don't know why you're mentioning Tim Schafer though, he's not even related to LSL. ;)

The only game I want to be remade is the first Deus EX. If they will use Unreal Engine 4, it could be (again) the best game in history...;)

Ahh, indeed. Apologies. I misread the context of the opening post, but even so I should've realized Tim has nothing to do with LSL.

Don't drink and post, kids.

Easy Rhinohrm, this isn't the early 90s people. you can stream porn for free now...
Yeah, LSL was one big porno movie :slap: When I want a porno, I'll watch a porno.

If the attractiveness of LSL was solely from the sexual situations and digi-boobs, then Magna Cum Laude and Box Office Bust should have been highlights in the franchise! And yet, they did poorly. Without the humor, situations, and subtleties that Al Lowe brought to the Laffer series, the Lovage series is the hot chick you can't stand talking to in the morning. Sex can sell, but not alone.
