thebluebumblebeeIMHO, bad form MSI, bad form.
I understand your reasoning but I think that the barrier of entry is something to take into account. If MSI asked of us to spend some time performing benches, making an essay or what have you then yes the second and third prizes are lame. The only thing you must do is click a button, nothing else.

I know that MSI isn't doing this intently, I'm sure that they had lots of leftover promo items from CES or something and want to get rid of them. The board is just enticement.

The other option is that MSI likes to remind people that second place is the first loser

thebluebumblebeeOne of the things that I enjoy about being on a site like TechPowerUp.com is seeing the different cultural and economic viewpoints. This giveaway has shown how people react on both accounts. I (my viewpoint) think it is in very poor taste to give, as a prize, anything but your best, and some of the comments echo that. These prizes represent the company, and MSI should have asked themselves what this says about them. Others don't care that MSI, "one of the world's largest motherboard and video card manufacturers. In addition, MSI also manufactures a wide range of products including notebooks, gaming laptops, All-in-One PCs, servers/workstations, industrial PCs, household appliances, car infotainment products, barebone systems and communication devices among other things" - with "Revenue TW$74.61 billion / $2.54 billion (2011)" (from wikipedia)- would give away a discontinued, (Newegg.com) previous generation product. This is not to bash MSI's products. Their use of "Military Class" components has contributed greatly to the quality and longevity of all motherboards today. I have a MSI N460GTX Twin Frozr II SOC that I absolutely love.
IMHO, bad form MSI, bad form.
I know MSI don't really need my defense here, but I have to disagree with you on this one. Discontinued or not, that is a good board (imho), and would do just fine with any of the current CPUs. Whoever gonna put that board into use, won't be disappointed, and won't feel that MSI gave him something low quality or cheap (even if many of us would probably just sell it). If TPU can get all these "previous generation" promo hardware and give it to one of us for free, that's a pure win-win situation both for MSI and for the TPU as well, and I'm all for it, please keep them coming as much as possible.

Thanks again for MSI and for TPU, giveaways are great:toast:

I wonder how much FARCEbook is paying these websites/manufacturers to hype FARCEbook? I see the same nonsense at several forums, so I doubt that it's a coincidence. It's amazing how easy it is to dupe the sheeple. ;)

Manufacturer is better to organize giveaway before launching something new like presentation hardware, not to clean storage of unsold products. Let's clean 1156 and 1366 shelf...
Miserable, MSI people expect 5-10 MSI 7970 lightening, ASUS people expect 5-10 Matrix,... Look on EVGA NEX Giveaway... 13.000$ worth, company with 200 employers.
People get hardware same week when retailers.

Do you know... I don't know is that true or not, one guy told he won motherboard from MSI, and they send broken motherboard and he can't get replacement.
Can you imagine... I swear in god he told that... I guess it's true because he non stop talk he finished with MSI. That was before 2-3 years.

if such a thing ever happens with a tpu giveaway i'll pay the cost out of my own pocket.

edit: or call their biggest competitor, ask if they could help out with a prize, then run a big news story on it.
