Samsung dock powers notebook for a month

Samsung Electronics has developed a docking station containing a 1200-watt-hour fuel cell, which is capable of powering a laptop for an enormous length of time. Designed for Samsung's Q35 ultra portable notebook, this dock can potentially power the machine for eight hours a day, five days a week for one month. The company is now working on a miniature version to provide 15 hours of power. This dock should hit the shops towards the end of 2007.

it must be early cause i completely miss the purpose of this. first off, i dont see anyone lugging that thing around. the purpose of a laptop is mobility! second, no purpose for home use since you can just plug in your ac adaptor. what am i missing?

yep its a good start, over a few years this will be miniaturized to fit into a regular notebook battery

alright, thats what i figured. you gotta start somewhere right? and to pay for the R&D you gotta sell some early units to continue pushing forward. there has been such little advancement in batteries over the past 15 years. finally something new.

what kind of fuelcells are we talking about here? Fuel Cells in general are very expensive. I question how they will be able to make something like this affordable.

That's pretty cool. They're developing a smaller one, too. Good for 15Hrs, sounds interesting to me. The only thing I don't like is the idea of having a bunch of Methanol sitting in my lap. lol

not all people get a laptop for mobility, alot of my friends have laptops to save space and i think an extended power supply like this could lend itself to operations where space is paramout such as sailing on a boat

Imagine what will happen when Sony start making these... they could be used as weapons.

Thats pretty awesome. Too bad they dont work with any other laptop. Im sure its got to cost some dineiro to get this. Hell, extra 12Hr or 12 cell batteries for a laptop are like 300 or 400 bucks.

I got a laptop simply because its a portable desktop.

Wanna play WoW at a friends? Just plug the laptop in. On the go? Just fire'er up.

You lose a lot of battery life this way, but its much more effective than lugging an SFF+LCD around.

and nicer :toast:

This thing is not necessary. The only time you'd need a laptop for that length of time, is if you take long flights overseas; however, on most oversea flights, there are power sources in nearly every seat.

 I remember when I was in the fourth grade and did science experiments with balloons filled with hydrogen. I'd hate to see what something with that much concentrated hydrogen would do.

But on the flipside, first convenient (and low cost) application of fuel cells!

We have to start somewhere. And as far as exploding or such.fuel cells put the hydrogen,methanol,etc...in a substrate-matrix so any crack or rupture will release the fuel very slowly. And as with any new technology,I'm sure it will cost uber bucks.
