AMD Cripples Older GCN GPUs of Async-Compute Support?

AMD allegedly disabled asynchronous-compute technology support on older generations of Graphics CoreNext (GCN) architecture, since Radeon Software 16.9.2. With the newer drivers, "Ashes of the Singularity" no longer supports asynchronous-compute, a feature that improves performance in the game, on GPUs based on the first-generation GCN architecture, such as the Radeon R9 280X.

"Ashes of the Singularity" benchmarks run by Beyond3D forum members on GCN 1.0 hardware, comparing older drivers to version 16.9.2 shows that the game supports async-compute on the older drivers, and returns improved performance. AMD, on its part, is pointing users to a patch change-list from the developers of "Ashes..." which reads that the game supports DirectX 12 async-compute only on GCN 1.1 (eg: Radeon R9 290) and above.

I would like the title not to ask it, but for w1z or users to confirm it

If true, that's really shitty move from AMD. First they advertise how awesome GCN is and how everyone gets async and now they want to remove that from users. That's how you lose an already small market share. Are they stupid or what? Or do they expect everyone will just blindly rush to grab a RX480? As much as I like the card, I don't believ that will happen after you piss off users by taking away readily available and usable functionality.

That guy has problems with Total war: Warhammer and Rise of the Tomb Raider. Looks like Ashes of Singularity effected too. So why Gaming Evolved studios (Oxide, Creative Assembly) should cripple Async especially after Oxide hyped Async so much?

Anyway can't wait for AdorkedTV damage control.

well considering anything lower than the 280x is GCN 1.0 which is said particular "devs" are excluding for async support, maybe it's time for an upgrade? The 280x is what 3 years old now?

They just stopped support on 1st gen CGN GPUs from a driver version onwards to be able to extract the best of the newer CGN based GPUs. Not any problem there in their logic imho. Didn't cripple anything as the 78X0 and 79X0 are 4 year old GPUs and 270-280 are just rebrands and all possible optimisations for them should be over by now through friver updates, whereas RX460, 470 and 480 are very new and Vega is coming soon too.

Yup.
"Radeon R9 280X was announced on September 25, 2013. "

Ok.
EarthDog280x = 7970, so its a lot older than that.
"AMD pulled the launch date of Radeon HD 7970, a high-performance single-GPU graphics card based on the 28 nm Tahiti silicon, up toDecember 22, 2011; from its earlier launch date of January 09, 2012."

By Google.

When amd does it, it's good for the consumer.
When nvidia does it, they are scumbags, scammers, evil moneygrabbers.

Sounds more like the devs rather than AMD... Either way sucks mostly because the rebranded GPU's that are still considered GCN 1.0 will suffer. Guess though that list is getting small anyways because of the age, but it still sucks...

I would think it's not something that was done consciously by AMD, considering they could call it an advantage over nVidia.

It seems that it was the developer, since it was listed in game change logs?

As others have said, this is total crap if AMD did something like this.

However, being that AMD seemed to respond and it's in the games change logs, I fully expect better reporting from TPU. This site is better than this type of "story"

Betteridge's law of headlines: Any headline that ends in a question mark can be answered by the word no.

I'm lurking on TPU for years, but I'm really unhappy with the direction where it's going -> wccftech. Also, why there are only 6 of 25 recent gpu reviews those of AMD cards? It used to be different :(

@btarunr - Please fix the title. This is a garbage clickbait headline and is absolutely a misrepresentation of what is going on.

The link to information about an Ashes of the Singularity patch is instead a link to a screenshot of Rise of the Tomb Raider patch notes.

Please do some research and/or testing before posting articles like this one in the future.

How is this clickbait? I read through the reddit post - looks like a real issue.

Do you even know what that word means?

Not sure, but the mods are full of bad opinions and openly support throwing away thousands of dollars on Star Citizen vapor-ware, and banning/locking those who disagree ;D
