Sony: Price Cuts Possible for PlayStation 3

TOKYO - Although Sony is blaming its faltering profits partly on PlayStation 3 price cuts in Japan, a senior executive said Wednesday that further slashing prices may be in store for the just-launched video game machine. Pricing is among the factors Sony Corp. (SNE) is studying as it expects to break even in its money-losing gaming business next fiscal year, said Senior Vice President Takao Yuhara, stressing that no additional price cut has been decided. "We may look at the price as part of our strategy to expand the market when the timing is right," Yuhara told reporters at Sony's Tokyo headquarters.

LOL they say the price is to low for the reason for there crappy profits, maybe if they lowered the price slightly then more people would buy it. :shadedshu

Poor Sony. I see a grim future for the console. Don't forget how cool the Dreamcast was, and it still bombed.

They need a price cut drastically. I know a lot of people that would already have one and would have bought a bunch of games if they were priced at $400 instead of $600. I know I won't buy one until they are at $400 or less.

When the cost of Blu-Ray drives decreases, there will be a large decrease in PS3 price.

They should release "PS3-lite"; a PS3 with DVD. Kill of blu-ray as too expensive. Dual layer DVD at 9GB will still be good enough for most games. A DVD swap is also possible for "long" games. Swapping a $300+ blu-ray drive with a $20 DVD drive will take the price down by $300. Whilst I think innovation is a great thing to promote... the PS3 is the wrong device to bring BR to market (at current prices).

SONY has killed the PS3 core with the media format. Idiots.

lol, the other day someone told ex-member Track that if they had a ban stick, they would break it over his head.... I ended up banning him as a result of that same post the other member had responded to.... hence, in a sense, I become the aforementioned weapon of choice.... :D

That might work, but I am sure the game developers that are already using over 9GB would have something to say about that.

This is very true, I never saw the correlation before, looks like the PS3 may be getting similar results to that of Dreamcast. I think the PS3 will have trouble maintaining its initial momentum. I honestly think if Sony waited one more year, It would be the new NEXT GEN CONSOLE. And Sony would have been incredibly successful, I think competition between a Low cost system(Wii) and a system(xbox 360) that provides argueably similar graphics for a lower price is far too much for the PS3. One more year would have done wonders for sony, everyone wanted it, so what do you do to get more people to want your product? Wait one more year till the product is cheaper and more developed games are ready for launch.

It will just take some time. I mean, there is still demand for a PS3, its just a smarter group of folks who are demanding it :)
