Nixeus Introduces the EDG 34 Monitor: 34" VA, 3440 x 1440, 144 Hz, 4 ms, FreeSync, 1500R

Nixeus has made their EDG 34 monitor available for pre-order through several retailers. The EDG 34, like the name not-so-subtly implies, carries a 34" diagonal panel based on VA technology. The resolution available on this panel stands at 3440 x 1440, so it has slightly lesser performance requirements than a 4K solution would, which can, at this point in time, be more of a strength than a handicap. The 4 ms gray-to-gray response is adequate, and the FreeSync support in the range of 48 Hz through 144 Hz, whilst giving pause, should be enough for most gaming scenarios - if you are driving this monitor, you most likely have powerful graphics hardware anyhow.

A 1500R curvature ensures the edges of the monitor are at the same distance from your eyes as the center. Color reproduction stands at a standard 16.7 million colors, and peak brightness is rated at 400 nits. Connectivity-wise, the monitor offers 2x DisplayPort 1.2 and 2x HDMI 2.0 ports (with refresh rates capped at 100 Hz). A 3.5 mm audio connector and VESA support are also part of the package. All of this can be had starting at a very interesting $499 on Newegg.

At this point I am just going to wait a couple more years for Micro or Mini LED panels.

That stand looks awful, it's so thin I can't believe it will survive long. 34inches can be really heavy.

The 3 year warranty will long be ran out before GPUs have the power to run a AAA game, looking their best, running at 144fps at 4K.

For example, Control gets around 35fps at 4K even on a 2080Ti, given we only get about 30% performance improvements every 18 months or so, to get the most out of this monitor playing Control you will have to have a top of the line GPU from 2028!!!

Ok so it won't be that long for Control because of optimisations but bear in mind new games will be harder to play than old game so it will be interesting to see how long it will take GPUs to catch up to 4K 144fps with everything turned up high.

So you get 60Fps at 1440p x1,34, not even close to 4K. 3080Ti will be just perfect for the 100Hz cap. A 2028 Gpu would be 10 times faster than 2080, so we can expect 200 fps at 4K at today's ultra visuals.

It's likely metal and heavy. Can always use some other VESA mount if you don't like it.

$500 price tag sounds very compelling to get one. Sadly this brand will never reach to me. =/

I mean, I have no issues in 3440x1440 and didn't with 4k with my 1080ti. You must be expecting those numbers with AA and everything else on.

I really don't think it will be and see no recent evidence to suggest it will. GPU tech development has slowed down massively in the last 10 or so years, unless there is a massive breakthrough like we move away from silicon or something then I think 30% every 18 months is realistic, possibly optimistic.

well it's not like that monitor is a 4k ... it's at best a 3.5k (2560x1440p is 2.5k 2880x1620p is 3k 3440x1440p is a 3.5 with a 2.5 vertical )
although my current 1070 can do 75hz on 1440/1620p (no real need for more) maxed out depending the game ... i see no issues with that monitor (aside the stand who is indeed a little thin)

if that brand was sold locally where i live ... i think i would have found my new monitor, since nope ... i think i will get by with a 32" Philips 325E1C/00 (2.5k 1500r curvature 4ms VA 75hz adaptive sync ) or 328FJAB/00 (32" 1500r curvature 4ms VA 60hz Freesync) and last option for the slightly more expensive, AOC AG322QC4 (2.5k 1800r curvature 4ms VA 144hz adaptive sync ok, official manufacturer description mention FreeSync2)

all 3 of them are around 400 to 550$ where i live all of them have a 2.5k resolution, are curved and the last one is 144hz (not that it is wanted ... it's a bit like 4k ... unwanted for now and to say some big name want to push 5k and 8k)

1440/1620p75 is the sweetspot for anything up to 32/34"

Not slowing down, it is the silence before the storm. New node and gpu like the 680 and 1080 4 years apart, new arch like 980 and 2080 in the middle. and the 1 year refreshes inbetween. But yeah the only thing that matters is the new node 4 year cycle and 2.5 performance uplift that goes with it. one in 2020, 2024 and 2028

I wouldn't buy anything with less than 100hz these days, so this monitor kind of works for me.

You forgot unwavering profit margins. Prices will go up, again. And ,yes, it's slowed down to nearly Intel levels lol. It used to be a new gen nearly doubled performance. Oh, boy, you can get maybe 30%, now. Whoopdeedoo.

So we have an idea on what is what. Marketing has taken over and made "2k" a thing even though it isnt (what they say it is).. XXXXp was also bastardized a bit.

yep good deal, I got the AOC 24" 1440p 144hz to hold me over, it was on sale for $199, and I really like it actually. minus the matte coating on it being stronger than most other monitors, leaves a grainy haze on whites. I might try to figure out a way to remove the matte coating someday, I don't know

Why is this worthless ultra wide and not 4k? I just noticed lol. Am I supposed to own another monitor just to watch videos? Sure, I could use the 55" TV...but then I'm not gonna have my PC surround sound setup.

I guess I'll never upgrade.

Not sure what you are talking about, there is already a Mini-LED panel on the market but it's like 3 grand. Micro and Mini LED are different than OLED, they have almost best picture of OLED but not burn in. They are coming in mass probably around 2021.

Guess I needed to do some reading, I was operating on my last reading on the issue, which was circa 2016 when it looked like OLED would overtake microled so hard it might die out.

Things are looking better for it plausibility wise, reading this:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MicroLED

It's not my fault, all I ever do anymore is security consulting.

I wouldn't be sure either way. I like emissive tech (liked Panasonics old Plasma screens, as an example). It just looks better in end result. Then again, the cost question may hand miniLED a victory, even if it still uses a backlight.
