AMD showcased a Barcelona Quad coupled with two R600 cards

On the presentation show of AMD's first chipset created in cooperation with ATI, the 690G, it flexed it's muscles in presenting a quad core Barcelona based PC system together with a pair of R600 graphics cards. The cards were running in Crossfire mode and the whole system was tweaked not for gaming but for calculating computational algorithms. It could squeeze out 10^12 floating point operations per second which equals a TeraFLOP/s (a term that get's quite popular today). AMD didn't seem to be tight lipped regarding the postponing of R600 at this event.

At least EE Times and The Register have a good deal more information packed into their articles.

At the press center of AMD there is now a press release covering the story.

it only needs to beable to support 2-8x slots, and im sure the new chipset has at least 16 lanes in it :)

The system showcased has nothing to do with the 690 chipset itself. It's another chipset featuring a Socket-F and most likely Registered DDR2 RAM. That system was just demoed to 'some' journalists at the launch event of the 690 chipset in San Francisco.

from what i been hearing and reading registered ecc ram is quite likely a dieing breed due to cost and speed issues, we shal see but if it wasnt registered ram it would be faster :)

I really hope they have something up there sleeves for R600 like some killer GPGPU software. Other wise people are going to stop waiting and start going NV and have no reason to switch when R600 gets here.
The 690 chipset looks like the real winner, with the new SFF boards this should be a really ITX killer.

hmm is the R600 made to work better with Barcelona? I guess we have to wait and see after all.

In a small village in Uganda a now 8 year old boy tosses his AMD pebble into the INTELL pond of his PowerPoint project, and the ripples start to wake!!
