Core 2 Duo Gives Birth to New Pentiums

Intel is reported to be planning new Pentium and Celeron processors based on the Core 2 Duo architecture. According to Chinese site HKEPC, the Pentium E2000 series will be launched on June 3rd, with the 1.6GHz E2140 and the 1.8GHz E2160. Both will feature a 1MB L2 cache with an 800MHz frontside bus, priced at $74 and $84 respectively. Whilst these two CPUs should replace the Pentium D 925 and 935, there will also be a new Celeron 400 series, with a 430 running at 1.8GHz and a 440 running at 2GHz, both of which will have a 512KB L2 cache and 800MHz FSB.

Intel is also expected to update its Core 2 Extreme range during the third quarter of this year, with the 2.66GHz QX6700 being replaced by the new 2.93GHz QX6800, which features a 1066MHz FSB and 4MB L2 cache - the price is expected to remain at $999, and this processor will be replaced with a 45nm chip sometime next year.

1.8ghz means a multiplier of 9 like the e6600 and e4300

something tells me these will do 3.6ghz

even with 1mb of cache these should fly at 3.6ghz, and only $84

i think i found my new processor to replace my aging 805

This would be a nice filler until the Penrys or Barcelonas come out

hmm - were these not originally announced as 800Mhz Single Core chips to fulfil Intel's commitment to provide legacy CPUs for corporate customers?

I wouldn't be putting too much credit on the replacement for the celerons... They will still be lacking, and bedsides by the time they are released....

I would say it's a great plan to actually use a Celeron as a temporary solution until Barcelona comes out, which is a MP capable server processor. I bet the situation that requires a MP system could do with a Celeron for the time being.

So it all comes down to L2 cache as it seems..

Core 2 Duo - 2MB/4MB
Pentium - 1MB
Celeron - 512K

Since L2 cache doesnt really matter ALL that much.. does that mean that a 3.0Ghz Celeron will beat my E6600?

well no one can really say yet as we don't know what this architecture does with so little L2 cache to work with

it might run fine with 2 and 4mb but start to choke with 1mb and really bog down with only 512kb
