Alienware Demos 34-inch QD-OLED Monitor at CES

Although Samsung apparently wasn't ready to show off its rumoured 34-inch QD-OLED monitor at CES, Alienware stepped up and demonstrated a fully working model that is said to be launching as soon as the 29th of March in the US market. The Alienware 34 Curved QD-LED Gaming Monitor or the AW3423DW as it's also known as, uses a curved QD-OLED panel from Samsung, with QD standing for Quantum Dot, a technology used to boost colours in various types of display panels.

The Alienware 34 Curved QD-LED Gaming Monitor offers a resolution of 3440x1440, which gives it an aspect ratio of 21:9. It's said to feature Nvidia's G-Sync Ultimate, with refresh rates of up to 175 Hz over DP and 100 Hz over HDMI. It has a typical brightness of only 250 cd/m², but as this is an HDR capable display, this can go as high as 1000 cd/m² in HDR mode. The monitor sports one DisplayPort 1.4, two HDMI 2.0 ports and three USB 3.2 ports at 5 Gbps, as well as a 3.5 mm headphone jack and a line-out jack. No word on pricing as yet, but it would be silly to presume this will be a cheap monitor.

Franzen4RealI think curves get a bad rep because the 'sweet spot' is completely dependent on a proper viewing distance, in order to ensure equal distance from your face across the entirety of the screen. If you sit too far away, the edges are closer than the middle and vice-versa which surely will cause odd distortions. I don't know how many people are actually looking at them correctly before making judgements. I too have a curved ultrawide, and I'll never go back to flat screens.

With TV's I think the issue of 'sweet spot' is a far bigger problem. TV's must be placed in a general living environment, couches and chairs placed in accordance to the room layout etc. It's very hard to have the perfect viewing distance, centered to the screen, to get the same sweet spot in something other than a purpose built home theater (or a man cave). Monitors on the other hand can be shifted forwards/backwards on the desk to get it correctly distanced for a given panel size/curve radius. I feel like curved TV's were quickly relegated to the gimmick category because they are actually more harmful than good in a majority of general living rooms, but curved monitors on the other hand -when properly set up- are a big advantage just as you said.

Very true, my curved screen was instantly comfortable and natural to look at on day one. Now that I have used it daily for quite a while, sometimes sitting in front of larger flat panels actually have a 'convex' illusion to them.
That sweet spot is like a stereo setup has a sweet spot. You notice that stuff sitting in front of it, and you naturally tend to adjust to ideal position.

That is why screen diagonal is so so important when buying a monitor.

It took me about a week to get fully adjusted to it really.

why always curved screen for LCD monitor 34 inch 3440x1400 on pc gaming, not new flat screen 34 inch 3440x1400.... ??

Because once you go past 32 inches a curved screen is better.

The only flat 34 inch ultrawide I see on the market is the Gigabyte G34WQC

AsniStill talking about curved displays in 2022. Cannot believe that.
For many buyers or people its a sexy thing and looks good! Curves always had! Nothing to do with tech and periodic innovations. Very much like my blond girlfriend who barely graduated high school, but her curves and the way she walks everyone sees and wants!

I always love their monitor design.
Time to upgrade from my 34UC99? Still concern about the burn-in, I may want to wait for long-term reviews.

Thing that looks better in your eyes doesn't mean it looks good for everyone else. It's called personal tastes.

For 34" I prefer curved to flat all the way.

This product is just not for you then, Acer and LG has some flat 34" monitors too you know.

Curved monitors are indeed sexy looking!! But not too much curve for me (1800R max is the best, 1900R is ideal)

Some people fail to understand the concept of personal preferences/tastes.

destruyaWhy is HDMI 2.1 so goddamned hard to add to displays? When you're paying for a premium display like this, why *wouldn't* you put 2.1 ports on it?
Well at least they did not bullshit it and say 2.1, i bet some are.
phanbueyMonitors definitely have poorer support.

48" is definitely too big for a desk. But that being said now that I have it wall mounted and the desk pulled back from the wall 5 inches. I'm afraid to go back to 32" :/ the immersion in games is awesome and sitting back further from the monitor has actually made my headaches from too much staring/coding go away-- bit of an unexpected side effect.
Not sure about other LG monitors but they do updates for mine every so often, and the updates are done though the USB-c connector.

I bought curved ultrawide display because I like the aesthetic, and the curve works better for my viewing experience.
It doesn't have anything to do with understanding tech. You seem to be missing the entire point here.

As I said, if you hate curved display, you are free to buy any flat display.. it's your personal preferences, no need to attack anyone with different opinion.

Just buy whatever you want to, of course it's your money. But you're not choosing between 2 alternatives: there's a correct option and a wrong option, technically wrong option.
As long as you're aware of this, we're fine. I don't want this thread to be misleading.

So you're implying that curved displays are not alternatives, but they are technically wrong options compared to flat displays and you want me to be aware of my wrong choice?
Hmmm...I'm not sure about that. Been using ultrawide curved monitor for everyday for years now, and I never find anything technically wrong with it. Although I'm very very aware that buying curved display was the correct decision I made.

You're already misleading. Flat or curved displays are not technically right or wrong options. They are both technically right options, either which one works best for the user. It's as simple as that. There are tons of flat vs curved display discussions/articles if you Google, you'll understand what I mean if you read them.
AsniAs many people fail to understand tech.
Are you describing yourself here?

Well, in the end it's up to you if you want to call curved display a "technically wrong" option, I just hope you don't mislead other people who want to get recommendation in buying monitor.

Have a nice day.

That's how most pc users do it. When I need multiple people viewing a screen I use the TV and couch for that.
