Corsair RMx Shift Series PSU Reimagines the Modular PSU

It's scary how nobody else thought of this. Imagine a modular PSU whose connectors are not at its tail end, but one of the sides that usually face right side-panel of your case, vastly minimizing cable clutter. That's the new Corsair RMx Shift series. All of the PSU's modular connections, including a 24-pin ATX, a couple of 4+4 pin EPS, a 16-pin 12VHPWR, six-odd 6+2 pin PCIe power, and a dozen SATA power connections, all wire out from the longer right side panel of the PSU (when oriented with its intake fan facing down). In most "cases," this would open up the connectors right below the motherboard tray, from where you can easily access them, without having to wrestle with them as you would on conventional modular PSUs. The RMx Shift includes new Corsair type-5 modular cables, and we expect these to be right angled, so further minimize cable clutter from having to bend these cables against the side-panel of your case. Pictured below are the RM1200x Shift, a 1200 W model with 80 Plus Gold efficiency, and the shorter RM850x Shift, its 850-Watt sibling.

idk...seems your case would have to be quite roomy in the "wide" department to have a connecter comfortable bend from there straight up, I know for sure this would not work in any of the cases I currently own, though tbf they are ancient.

I like it. it truly does take some imagination to incorporate such a fad.

These might only work for cases that have PSU mounts on Top front of case and even then the bends would be quite uncomfortable for most of them.

There's really no other option, if they're not it's a massive fail on their part, it would make the clutter of routing teh cables much worse otherwise.

The 12pin pcie 12VHPWR connector does not need to be a single 12 pin in both ends

This is an interesting idea, the problem is that it completely destroys compatibility with current ATX systems. Granted, the number of use-cases where you won't mount the PSU fan-down is relatively low and niche, but standards are standards for a reason.

I also see an issue with the internal PSU layout in respect to cooling; PSUs are longer than they are wide, precisely so that the connectors can be fit in at the "front", away from the AC-DC and DC-DC circuitry that requires cooling. This design puts the connectors in the way of the fan, thus reducing the area directly below the fan available to the hot conversion circuitry; what impact is this going to have on cooling?

@crmaris any possibility of getting one of these in for review anytime soon?

Hi,
@TheLostSwede
Which psu maker just made a psu with two 12 pin ports ?

Corsair loves doing pigtails for 8 pin cables so yeah wouldn't be surprised to see them use one 8 port to make 12

Maybe they did, but as other pointed out, it's a hard sell if not implemented well, considering the limitations these might encounter on current ATX cases.

Those plugs are way too close to each other.

If I recall correctly these were designed by Jonny Guru, so very likely don't have such obvious and glaring design problems.

I didn't say it would be a problem, just that there will obviously be an impact, and I'd like to understand what Corsair has done to mitigate said impact.

As a user of a case with a 90-degree mobo rotation, I find this design -- interesting. Be nice to see internal shots to determine engineering benefits beyond just design.

Edit: Upon further thought, I suspect this design is real estate driven to better accommodate the plethora of connections with ample spacing on the outside and very likely inside.

So when do they announce the cases they specifically designed these for?

how about the cables ? still same as before or any different ?

same thought about how bad the cables will bend if the side panel from your case not wide enough ..

I have an XPG Invader and no way this PSU would fit in it without dangerously bending cables. And I don't know how this is any improvement over the typical, given the space is precisely on the back and the routing is near it...
Probably for some case with a special PSU location...

I've had many ideas in my head about cabling, this was one of them. Not sure is it any good, but surely interesting setup and not new idea, at least not for me. :)

You still need the sense wires and the cable and corrector need be able to take the high current. So this one probably doesn't have 12 pins connector. It'll go with long time to market.

It looks like it would be particularly nice in a dual chamber case like Lian Li 011D with the connectors facing up.
