Counter Strike: Global Offensive 2 Out Later This Month?

Valve Software is giving final touches to its first PC title in close to a decade, and under its cult-classic Counter Strike franchise. The game's tightly-guarded development was leaked to the web in an NVIDIA GeForce software game profiles file, which described its binary executable files as "csgos2.exe" and "cs2.exe". VideoGames Chronicle dug deeper and discovered that the game has been in development at Valve for some time now, and is designed to be a modern e-sports title. It is based on the latest version of the company's in-house Source 2 game engine ("Half Life: Alyx"), and features an advanced multiplayer server architecture that ensures 128-tick, similar to "Valorant." The company is also using an in-house new matchmaking engine. With the emergence of this game on NVIDIA driver profiles, Counter Strike Global Offensive 2 should reach the public in some shape or form (at least an open beta), later this month.

Sounds more like it's just CSGO updated to use the Source 2 engine. I have doubts that it's a whole new game.

yeah, even the executable name "csgos2" sounds indicative of that, given that the "s" could just mean "source" and "2" being the engine version

I always wanted to see a big “3” reveal exclusive to Steam OS to counter windows PC gaming monopoly:

Source code 3
DOTA 3
CS 3
DOD 3
L4D 3
HL 3
Portal 3
TF 3

But after the HL2 Alcatraz debacle, Gabe shrank away from game development and the Steam platform was too lucrative to go against windows or scare away competing game developers.

Of course the latter happened anyway with Epic, EA and other online distributors. Still the resilience of the “2” generation is surprising to me.

If you watch interviews regarding HL:A, valve wants each game to innovate is some way. From what I gathered, that is far more important to them. They even stated that they scrapped multiple extensive HL3 prototypes because they did not meet that standard.

Valve doesn't understand the number 3.

That's why this is only number 2, which also means CSGO2 is the end of Counterstrike. Putting a 2 after something is basically confirmation that Valve will immediately abandon it. Game over, terrorists win, etc.
