Windows Vista Breaks Sales Record

Microsoft's new operating system, Windows Vista, sold 40 million copies in 100 days making it the fastest selling operating system in history. Premium Edition accounts for 78 percent of sales. Chairman Bill Gates credits an accelerated consumer shift to the digital lifestyle. Windows operating systems run on more than 95 percent of the world's computers.

I know those people are wrong, it's just a repeat of the "Oh my god Windows 2000 pwnz0rz XP! XP sucks system resources!!!!!!!" which has turned into "Oh my god Windows XP pwnz0rz Vista! Vista sucks system resources!!!!!!!"
To be honest I can understand why soo many people have bought Vista, I myself have bought 4 copies since launch for all my computers...

i won't buy vista never (i will "get it"), but only when i get 2gb and a dx 10 card, and some dx10 games, until then it's pretty much useless to me

well, go figure -- the short, crappy article doesn't say anything about how many of these "40 million" sales were preinstalled on computers, which, if you ask me, shouldn't count the same as someone actually going to a store and buying Vista retail.

no need to bite me rhino, i was simply surprised it sold so well.

Of course i'm running vista myself, ultimate x64 - i've got an 8800GTX, i'm not going to waste it on DX9 :P

as "mdm-adph" said, i wonder how many copies were preinstalls?

Well, if you are going to compare apples to apples, then you would have to also ask how many XP sales were on pre-installs also. Both OS's work fine for me, but Vista has been the easiest MS OS to install ever.

My guess would be that preinstalls constitute a large portion of the sales (and the same with XP).

And, thusly, should not be counted as any kind of reasonable measure of an OS's popularity. How many preinstalled copies of Vista were bought in a situation where the user even had a choice?

Do these numbers include volume licensing? How many bulk licenses for Vista has Dell bought? HP? Are these figures included?

If Bill Gates/etc. are trying to insinuate that there are 40 million individuals out there who have bought a new copy of Vista, they're fooling themselves.

And for the next quarter MS will post the greatest decline of sales
of an OS they have ever seen. :) In fact Dell is even backpedaling
and offering XP again on many of their systems.

ooh, yeah, baby -- i'm so totally jealous of an operating system that's routinely shoved down users throats, whether they want it or not. :P

seriously, saying that vista is "popular" on PC's because lots of people might be using it is like saying that the MacOS is "popular" on Macintosh computers. where there isn't any real choice, there isn't real "popularity."

If you want to tout Vista's benefits, do so, but don't spout bullshit numbers.

I've used Vista a bit and I must say that I do like it. However, I'm in the same boat as pt. I'll wait until I build a dx10 machine before I opt into this new operating system.

No, you are wrong.

They force this down peoples throat.

If you want a sign of popularity, look at the Wii Vs PS3.

They cant even keep them on the shelf.

Whereas windows, if you want to go buy a computer, you have no other option. This is nothing more than marketing FUD.. especially considering its coming from CNN money.

For real results, You have to look at how many of those "copies" are OEM.

Probably close to 90% or more.

hey they arnt making you get vista and you wont be made to get vista for a few years. its just if you dont get vista you dont get Dx10 or Halo 2, etc. but once only Dx10 games start showing up you will have to get vista to keep playing games but intil them you dont have to get it. you just dont get most of the newer stuff that comes out. i mean them making halo 2 for vista only is tring to get you to buy vista but they arnt "making" you, but i guess if you really want to play halo 2 then i guess in a way they are "making" you but hey its just how it is and how you think about it. ;)

Vista is marketed to the masses of "common" stupid people out there, so obviously they dont know the differences and the full details behind Vista, vs say XP or Server 2008. If they did, and had read THIS writeup in full (including all given links within the writeup), I'm guessing they would of opted for XP, Server 08, or the last version of the server OS.

nobody said vista sucks (the jury's still out on that one) -- people are only saying that these "sales" numbers are bullshit. Most of these 40 million copies are OEM copies (distributed directly to PC manufacturers at bargain-basement prices) and thus really shouldn't be included in "sales" figures, but Microsoft's trying to woo its shareholders, so they've got to fudge the numbers a little bit.

Indeed theres that turn as well as the one I made a few posts up. Its cunning, and borderline misleading, but not quite illegal.

how is saying 40 million copies have sold fudging the numbers? you either sell 40 million copies or you dont. how they are sold, either OEM or retail is neither here no there. people are buying PCs with vista on them. if vista sucked they would buy XP and uninstall vista.

The point being made is pre-built machines are sold to people who know little to nothing about PCs in large, so they likely dont even know XP exists, or more to the point, the mass produced kit is just handed to them, pre-installed with whatever, and your average punter will just use it. More and more people are buying PCs by way of nature and the times, most of those pre-builds naturally ship with Vista, it doesnt mean Vista is better or more popular than previous OS', just that more people are buying a PC.
