I see even relatively new tech companies now want to be like Apple… in terms of marketing their products with unnecessary pomp anyway.

I am pretty sure most people buying these portable PC console things already have a desktop anyway, those things are more of a luxury type of thing.
You also need to keep in mind that most peoples "computers" are a laptop, a cell phone, and maybe a tablet. All of which do exactly what is needed for non bullshit activities but also allow goofing off and other items. A desktop is a quaint relic of the 90's and a very silly thing to own for them.
Going one further most people that do having a "gaming computer" are using 1080p 60hz displays on computers that will get slaughtered and stomped on by a PS or XBOX. So having a device like this and hooking it up to the laptop they already have is cheaper than a desktop, it's not going to perform worse. In many cases this is probably a solid upgrade.
There's nothing wrong with it. Things are just moving in this direction.
Before someone cries 'but it would be slower because only 40Gbps', I think it would still be much, much faster than this one and, what's more important, much more capable for e.g. video editing.
Second, quote, 'I think it would still be much, much faster' even on 40Gbps, and that was an educated guess: while 'you're not using the full potential' you still get more VRAM, quote, 'for e.g. video editing', which may enable more complicated video projects, and that's something you cannot emulate with less VRAM.
Third, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 PCI-Express Scaling with Core i9-13900K says you're 'wasting' around 20% on average by downgrading to 40Gbps on much faster card (than laptop versions I mentioned) with faster processor (than in laptops or mini PCs this eGPU is intended for); so my educated guess is that no, I won't be 'wasting' much and yes, this mid-tier GPU will be 'far off'.
"cloud gaming" has tried for decades to be the future, and keeps running into this pesky thing called physics. Unless quantum networks with sub 1ms lag become the norm, cloud gaming will never happen. Even today it's only a small portion of the market, mostly propped up by nvidia's geforce and AI divisions. It isnt sustainable in its own right, much like streaming.
Right, this says different. Also, that’s with a desktop CPU instead of a laptop CPU so you lose even more performance with the laptop version so that could be up towards 40% performance loss on the 4090. That’s bad. With the 7840hs, which is not even the highest end mobile cpu(uhh I mean APU) from AMD only loses around 10% performance when using oculink
Would rather see a modular PCIe slotted enclosure, with an off-the-shelf dGPU, custom-cooled and custom-BIOS'd.
