ASUS ROG Debuts its RTX 4090 XG Mobile GPU in China and Japan

ASUS ROG has started selling its RTX 4090 XG Mobile external graphics card in China and Japan this week. Japanese customers are being charged a cool $3000 for the pint-sized powerhouse external GPU, and Chinese buyers are getting a slightly better deal at $2700. It should be noted that this eGPU is the (GN21-X11) mobile variant of the GeForce RTX 4090, and not the full fat desktop version. The newly updated XG Mobile enclosure can only be connected to an ASUS Flow laptop, which limits the scope of compatibility to an already very expensive range of devices. The proprietary connection standard will keep customers in the ASUS ROG mobile hardware ecosystem - but their higher end laptop models can be configured with the very capable GeForce RTX 4070 mobile GPU, so the RTX 4090 XG Mobile seems to appeal to a very small buying niche.

The XG Mobile interface uses the PCIE Gen 3 x8 standard of connection, and the GPU has access to a dedicated 63 GB/s of bandwidth. This beats the Thunderbolt 4 standard of 40 Gb/s, by a 57% margin. The enclosure acts as a docking station - its features include an up to 2.5 Gbit Ethernet, a single HDMI 2.1 port, one DisplayPort 1.4 with G-Sync support and three USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports (3x Type-A + 1x Type-C). ASUS ROG has engineered the docking station/enclosure to be as compact as possible (21.7 cm x 16.5 cm x 3.26 cm), when compared to competing products from other manufacturers. The whole package weighs in at 1.3 kg, which will ensure decent portability for gamers on the move.

For nearly 40 years, the Windows PC has held a place at the center of our lives. It's contributed to new levels of productivity, kept us all connected, and unlocked our creativity and potential through innovations we couldn't have imagined when we first began this journey. Just think about how far we've come in how people interact with it. From the very first text-based keyboard input to the precision of point and click with the mouse, up to today, where touch, voice, pen and gestures all help people use the Windows PC more naturally and intuitively. From its inception, Surface has been a catalyst for that change.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Comes in 12GB and 16GB Variants

NVIDIA's upcoming GeForce RTX 4080 "Ada," a successor to the RTX 3080 "Ampere," reportedly comes in two distinct variants based on memory size, memory bus width, and possibly even core-configuration. MEGAsizeGPU reports that they have seen two reference designs for the RTX 4080, one with 12 GB of memory and a 10-layer PCB, and the other with 16 GB of memory and a 12-layer PCB. Increasing numbers of PCB layers enable greater density of wiring around the ASIC. At debut, the flagship product from NVIDIA is expected to be the RTX 4090, with its 24 GB memory size, and 14-layer PCB. Apparently, the 12 GB and 16 GB variants of the RTX 4080 feature vastly different PCB designs.

We've known from past attempts at memory-based variants, such as the GTX 1060 (3 GB vs. 6 GB), or the more recent RTX 3080 (10 GB vs. 12 GB), that NVIDIA turns to other levers to differentiate variants, such as core-configuration (numbers of available CUDA cores), and the same is highly likely with the RTX 4080. The RTX 4080 12 GB, RTX 4080 16 GB, and the RTX 4090, could be NVIDIA's answers to AMD's RDNA3-based successors of the RX 6800, RX 6800 XT, and RX 6950 XT, respectively.

Immovable Steam Deck? Enthusiast Enables AMD RX 6900 XT Graphics Card "eGPU"

A Steam Deck enthusiast has done what Steam would not (at least not in the first rendition of its popular Steam Deck handheld console): he went and added an external GPU to the mix. The owner of the ETA Prime YouTube channel managed to increase the Steam Deck's APU-powered graphical oomph with a much more powerful AMD RX 6900 XT graphics card. To do so required sacrifices however: since the SteamDeck doesn't feature a proper Thunderbolt 3/4 connector, ETA Prime had to remove the Steam Deck's SSD from its M.2 port, instead mounting a special M.2 to PCIe adapter in the SSD slot itself.

This, of course, required that installed games be run off memory cards, which generally offer lower speeds (a less than stellar experience) than the onboard SSD. It also required butchering the Steam Deck's OS by replacing it with Windows 11. But it did allow the Steam Deck's APU to tap onto power otherwise unavailable to it, unlocking playable framerates with maxed out detail settings on games such as God of War, Cyberpunk 2077, Elden Ring, and others.

GIGABYTE's 2021 AORUS Gaming Box eGPU Packs RTX 3080 Ti, Liquid Cooling

The 2021 GIGABYTE AORUS Gaming Box external GPU was debuted late last week. It introduces many firsts for a market less addressed this generation, particularly due to the GPU shortage. The lineup debuts with a model based on NVIDIA's flagship GeForce RTX 3080 Ti, and introduces a liquid-cooling. The box uses an all-in-one, closed-loop liquid cooler to tame the RTX 3080 Ti, using a 240 mm x 120 mm radiator and a pair of 120 mm fans located inside the box, while additional fans ventilate the rest of its innards.

For all its might, the card is bound to be bottlenecked by its interface—a single 40 Gbps Thunderbolt 3 connection that gives the GPU the equivalent of a PCI-Express 3.0 x4 interface. Our RTX 3080 non-Ti PCI Express Scaling article shows that the GPU loses 12% performance on PCI-Express 1.1 x16 (comparable bandwidth to PCIe 3.0 x4). Other features of the AORUS Gaming Box include a USB 3.0 hub, and addressable RGB lighting that you can control using the RGB Fusion software. The company didn't reveal pricing or availability, but one can expect a roughly $300-400 markup over whatever the running rate of an RTX 3080 Ti these days, is. GIGABYTE is expected to carve out more Gaming Box products based on the same chassis, but using different GPUs.

Gigabyte Launches Watercooled AORUS Gaming Box With NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti

Gigabyte, via its AORUS brand, today launched the eGPU to outclass all other. The new AORUS Gaming Box is an eGPU solution that features a watercooled version of NVIDIA's RTX 2080 Ti graphics card - the current cream of the crop when it comes to raytracing performance. Apparently, and despite being an AORUS-branded product, the AORUS Gaming Box hasn't been overclocked - which makes sense, considering the thermal constraints already in place with such solutions. The RTX 2080 Ti inside the new Gaming Box features an AIO cooling solution with a copper baseplate and two 120 mm fans for airflow.

The enclosure also features two removable dust filters for maintenance purposes. Connectivity-wise, we're talking about 2x USB 3.0, 1x USB Type-C, 1x Thunderbolt, 1x Ethernet, 3x DisplayPort and 1x HDMI. No word on pricing or weight of the solution, but it's likely a heavyweight when it comes to taking punches out of your wallet, as are usually any such external solutions.

GIGABYTE to Introduce RTX 2070 eGPU Gaming Box

eGPUs may not have made quite as much of an impact on the market as one might expect - but maybe that's because of incorrect expectations. The idea of having an external GPU box to increase a given machine's frame output when it's stationary is all well and good, but that begs the question of why not just buying a more powerful machine outright, which will allow users to keep their mobility and portability.

It seems GIGABYTE is readying another eGPU solution, after their work on their RX 580 gaming box. The box is equipped with a GIGABYTE-engineered GeForce RTX 2070 graphics which features 1x HDMI, 3x DisplayPort, 1x USB-C, 1x ThunderBolt 3 and 3x USB 3.0 ports, so it also serves as an extender for your laptop's (or mini-ATX) functionality.
