Cory Barlog Approved Kratos to be Featured in Astro Bot
Team Asobi's Astro Bot was released for PlayStation 5 on September 6, 2024, and it received many positive reviews and critics from fans. Recently, Team Asobi president Nicholas Doucet explained that he directly approached God of War's Cory Barlog and Eric Williams about getting Kratos' cameo for the game. And was surprised to see they were excited about what he was going to do with Kratos in Astro Bot.
Cory Barlog explained that for a dramatic game like the God of War IP, you have to be very careful with the world, and he was excited to see what Team Asobi would do with Kratos in Astro Bot, something different from the way it is in God of War at least. Nicholas said their expectations were to get 50 cameos, but they were shocked that they almost got everyone. The PlayStation partners expressed their support for Astro Bot and were excited to see their characters used in the game."I thought we'd ask for 150 cameos and we'd get 50 but we got almost everything we asked for - We spoke directly to Cory Barlog and Eric Williams and in their eyes, it's great that we're able to do something different with Kratos. God of War is such a dramatic IP and you have to be very careful about the world, so the moment you start bending those rules it's quite refreshing for them"—Doucet in a recent interview with GQ.
Kratos is not the only character being featured in Astro Bot, but also Atreus, Mimir, Sindri, Brok, Freya, Angrboða, Thor, and Thrúd.
In another interview with Variety, Doucet explained that all the PlayStation partners were very supportive, and were eager to see what the studio would do with their characters.
"I'm very, very happy with the amount of love and care that our partners have shown us, because it was their positive attitude towards the game that made it possible. Ownership of IPs and things like that sometimes can be a subject of friction or productivity, and the fact that we're able to use these characters and twist them, because a lot of the time we make fun of them… I think it goes to show that people really embrace that fun and playfulness. And that's a really positive human experience because those people were really supportive of what we were doing with their characters."
He also said, "Not just the God of War franchise, but Astro Bot also features characters from Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharted, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, The Last of Us, Infamous: Second Son, Infamous, Gravity Rush, Street Fighter, Tekken, Ghost of Tsushima, Ape Escape, Jak and Daxter and many more."
Astro Bot is the biggest crossover game you'll ever see this year, 2024. Team Asobi has big plans for the franchise's future, and this is only the beginning.
