Nintendo Wii outselling Sony PS3 by a 6:1 ratio in Japan

The Nintendo Wii seems to just keep getting more popular in Japan. While some people in America (including SCEA) feel that the Wii is just a passing fad, the Japanese will not hear any of this. Nintendo is selling six Wii's for every Sony PS3 sold in Japan. Nintendo sold 270,974 Wii consoles during June, while Sony sold 41,628 PS3s. Microsoft's Xbox 360, which is very unpopular in Japan, got 17,616 sales.

The main factor here is the low price of the Wii. If the PS3 was as cheap, Im sure the PS3 would be in the lead. Also the Japanese are very loyal to fellow Japanese companies, hence the 360 not doing very well (because its a product of the US)

as with every new ps just wait a year or so, they're cheaper with more games. but atm i can't see the point when pc games r looking better already.

That sucks for Sony, but that's what they get for selling a console for more money than most can afford just to play games. Nintendo will stay in the lead (in regards to sales) with their cheap console and cheap gimmicks unless the other guys can step up.

And if a new Ferrari was £10,000 they'd outsell the Ford Focus by far. At the end of the day they aren't, so people choose the Wii and the Ford. That said, Japan has always been a Nintendo loving nation, so this is hardly a surprise. Even if the PS3 was much cheaper, the Wii would probably still do better there.

Yea ok sure, Im sure well all go out and just buy stuff based on the facts that its cheap. In fact, I dont own a PS2, should i go out and buy that just because its cheap? I think not.

When my friend had the choice to buy a DS for $99,$119, and $129. Guess what? He went for the one that was most expensive. I just hate how people ignore the fact that the system is fun. And this is coming from someone who was a hardcore sony fan back in the day. Dumped my 64 for the Playstation completely.

Well the main factor is nintendo knowing what people want and are willing to pay for. The games for the wii are quite a lot of fun and its a great "party" console. If it was priced higher it would have been a harder sell, but the wii was pushed into what Sony and Microsoft thought was a niche market...the gamers market, I dare say the "casual gamers" market... Sony and Microsoft have a habit of over complicating things and assuming people want to buy a console to do more than just games. Frankly I think its the other way round, just about everyone I know plays a console for the games, I dont know anyone who bought a 360 or a ps3 because its got a high def dvd player, or because its a mini media center, or any of that.

But in regards to the 360s low numbers, I think its got more to do with the fact that the system went on sale in Nov 05 (according to wikipedia) where as the PS3 launched in Japan in Nov 06, so frankly anyone who wanted a 360, probably already had it by the time these figures printed. I cant really say much for its popularity in Japan, being that I live in the US and have never been to Japan, but I really dont expect an older product to continue to keep ground breaking sales in the face of newer consoles, however they are configured. To a lot of people, "newer" simply means better, aside from the fact that a lot of people like to be able to say "I have the newest".

I dunno, I never really was much of a console junky. I was always into PC gaming because I felt less restricted, if I didnt like the way a game played I could very easily modify it to add my own content, or download content that others have made. Aside from the fact that I can a lot more on the pc as a platform, than I ever could on any console. My brothers owned some of the earlier consoles like the NES/SNES or the various SEGA consoles, but all I ever bought was the original playstation, the N64, and I borrowed my brothers PS2 once he got bored with it (before he sold it of course :p ) but I dont own or intend to ever buy a new microsoft or sony console...like just about every other computer geek out there I will say it again, if I was to buy a console tomorrow it would probably be a wii :p

Dont be sarcastic saying "should I go and buy a PS2!" We are taking about the next-gen consoles here!

Actually m8, up until recently I owned a Wii and an XBOX360 (I sold the Wii the other day because it wasnt being used) So Im not biased about brand name.

The Wii is fun, no doubt about it. But I got bored with it....I guess I just like the 360 more.

PS: Ive always loved Nintendo, Ive owned practically every console/handheld ever made by them, but then again, Ive probably owned nearly every other non-Nintendo console ever released in the UK (apart from the Atari Jaguar)

PPS: what does your weird rambling about a DS have to do with anything, if your m8 went for the most expensive one because of the price, he must be an idiot. But if he was offered a Nintendo DS for $99, but a Nintendo DS Lite for $129, I can see why he went for the more expensive one.....the DS Lite is better.

the good thing with the wii (and gamecube before it) is that while sony and microsoft are trying to offer media centre systems, nintendo aim solely to make a games machine, significantly lowering the cost (as much to the gamers as themselves), i mean, who wants a media centre (as in the case of ps2, ps3, xbox + 360) that has an unpleasant howl of small fast fans? ok, maybe this is a bit off topic, but i just dont see ANY of the sony or microsoft consoles as a viable media centre, yet that is a good part of why they cost so much more than a wii

If I want a media center I'll get me a HTPC, best of both worlds :D

But yeah, the console ITSELF is alot cheaper than say...with a Blue ray player and whatnot. I bought it for games, and for games it shall be used!

Haha, obviously you don't know how well the PS2 still sells in Japan.

Please specify, I'm curious what you would like it to do that's it's not able to.
(genuine question, no tone intended, I'm not here to crusade for Sony or MS)

The reason for that is because sony were very anal, insisting on thrusting blueray down everybodys throats, and to boot wanting to develop their own in-house blue ray, which they screwed up royally and had to go right back to the drawing board. No question sony are just trying to get R&D funds back up. Eitherway, until the PS3 is like £200, sony can kiss my arse I'm not buying it.
