Portal Pre-Load Underway

Those who pre-purchased Valve's first person brain twister Portal through Steam, either in the $44.99 ultra compilation The Orange Box or by its $19.99 separate listing, can now begin downloading the game's assets. Commonly referred to as pre-loading, the idea is to let gamers gradually download a game in advance so they only need to download a small enabling file on the day of its release, preventing owners from being held back by slow download speeds and clogged servers. With The Orange Box gone gold and confirmed to release on October 10th for PC and Xbox 360, the pre-load for Half-Life 2: Episode Two is also expected to begin shortly.

wow tf2 lags on your rig? That's quite surprising! I guess I've only seen it run on HD2900s (which run it amazingly) but I didn't imagine it would lag on any setup!

It doesnt really lag, but the fps spikes like crazy when outdoors, no matter what res or settings. I ran the game 1280 (4:3) and everything more or less on low, and still spikes. Now running the game 1650 (16:10) maxed out everything in dx8, and the game runs flawless. This tells me this game has some dx9 issues or something.

i get no lag on my machine at 1600x1200 maxxed out.i have to have vsync on tho' or it tears really bad.i think the refresh is 60 at 1600 but my monitor will do 1600 at 70hz refresh, tho' i guess tf2 defaults it at 60hz.

well it is a beta, the whole network'll lag at the same time sometimes when i'm playing, all the sudden all the servers spike and you're frozen for a second or two. the nice thing about a beta is it allows them to fix all of theses things before official release.

TF2 is the most demanding progam on the source engine thus far.

It runs with everything maxed @ 2xAA 8xAF, full HDR, motion blur 1440x900 just fine for me.
It's not any more demanding than day of defeat source, less complex textures.

Portal looks more demanding than TF2.

There is indefinably a bug in the game then, why do i get choppy with 2x 7600gt with those same settings.

Doesn't SLI have to be enabled per-game in the drivers? TF2 optimization is probably not there yet.

Now one thing is that my cards have different clock speeds, how do I oc the slower one to be on par with the faster. I set the clocks at 604 in ntune, but it doesnt have an option for both? does this do it to both cards?
