Qimonda Develops Low-voltage 800MHz FB-DIMMs

Qimonda said it is developing with Supermicro FB-DIMM memory modules with decreased supply voltage to address one of the key concerns of this memory technology - power consumption. The new 800MHz FB DIMMs operate with a supply voltage of 1.5V, instead of the regular 1.8V. According to Qimonda the 16.6% reduction in voltage results in up to 20% reduction in direct system-level power consumption in a fully loaded system. Additional power and cost savings can be achieved as the memory modules show lower heat dissipation. Qimonda claims that the power savings do not cause performance loss. The company said that it has supplied the low-voltage FB-DIMMs to Supermicro in a 2GB configuration for a demonstration at the ongoing supercomputing conference SC07. The companies did not say when these devices will be available for purchase.

Up to a 20% reduction? What were they using? Onboard graphics, one HDD, no other perhipials, and a low-wattqge CPU? All passive... no fans? :roll:

More improved memory circuits and ic pathways. Thats just a guess though.

Perhaps you should stop the :roll: and start :banghead:.

FB-DIMMs are used on the Intel 5000/5400 platforms. Those are high end workstations and servers. Since they're speaking of such a huge improvement in power usage it's about servers with 16-24 DIMM's that use around 10W each. So since it's a server platform I would say yes they did use on board graphics.

Perhaps you should know what the news is about before you start :roll:.

Pointless currently, but since you asked.

I'm waiting for confirmation that Clovers can run at 1600MHz FSB on Seaburg, if that works I'm planning on replacing my motherboard and have my Current CPU's run at 1600+ MHz FSB, at that time new memory could be nice to run 1:1.

Also, these modules won't work on my current board anyway, i5000 only supports 1.8V

That's why my overclock statement. 1.5 modules running at 1.8 should yield better OCs. Well, at least that's what I would expect, anyway.
