AMD to Cut Prices of HD 3800 Series

While the HD 3800 series is already available at a relatively low price (the 3850 has an MSRP of $180USD, while the 3870 has an MSRP of $220USD), AMD is considering cutting the price down to even lower amounts. There is no word as to how low AMD will go, but cheap, high power graphics cards just in time for Christmas may be exactly what AMD needs to re-claim market share from NVIDIA and their $300 8800GT. AMD increased their market share with a similar maneuver last year, by releasing value-oriented and powerful X1950 and X1650 graphics cards. This move increased AMD's market share by 2.1%, giving them 23% market share this time last year. NVIDIA has their own plans to get holiday sales, and hopes to churn out enough G92 chips to meet demand.

The 3850 @£100 would make it a very attractive buy, you can then flog them cheap once the next generation cards are released a few months after without that big a loss...

as of now: the 8800gt is about 300 bucks the 3870 is about 200 bucks if amd is to drop it down to 150 bucks then:

1 8800 gt = 2 hd3780's
8800gt <<<< 2 3870s

the 3870's are really good and are quite competitive with the 8800gt... yes? and when you can get 2 of those in CFX vs. the 8800gt single for the same price. which one will win? i think this is amds move

Sounds great AMD, but where in the hell is the supply? If these cards were even cheaper, that would allow me to go buy a new system to throw them in!

I think thats what ATI is doing. Making to where it easier for people who all ready have their cards in CFX to just spend 340 so to say and have two great cards in CFX. Remember, all the reviews for the 38xx was both shown in regular and CFX form. That made it better for us to be able to know if we wanted it or not.
As for the fact that you can't find one... Tigerdirect has both the cards in stock. 1 3870

well CFX is still locked, you need CCC 8 to unlock it. though the 790fx chipset is built for it. i'd like to c the performance increase from using CFX vs. CF

if the price cut is like the 3870 from 219 to 179-189 and the 3850 from 179 to 149-159 then i mite consider getting a xfire setup, i've always bought nvidia cause they've been on top for the past few yrs but i would really like ati to come out with a high end card to compete with the 8800GT at least, the harder the competition the harder nvidia has to work to make superior cards

Well that's nice, but cheapest HD3870 is currently 208€/150£/309$ (not in stock). Cheapest 8800GT is just 1€/0.7£/1.5$ more! (and not in stock). I know there is VAT to be added to USA prices, but no way I'm paying the same on weaker card that is so much over the MSRP.

First we need stock, then we need suggested retail prices and after that price cuts are welcome. They'll just drop the price to the previous MSRP and take a big win. We need the european newegg bad, wonder what happened to that plan :/

Hmm, maybe I should withdraw my verdict of AMD screwing the pooch on every recent item. If the 3870 drops below $200, they could take a serious chunk of profit away from Nvidia.

Sounds great. They are already pretty affordable to begin with. Right now, not a single nVidia card seems like a good value. Those old 8800GTS cards go for anywhere from $280 to $360 deepening if it's a 320MB or a 640MB model and that is just ridiculous. (They go for even more on eBay.) 8800GT, while a decent card, is simply overpriced at this time and too hard to find at the stated MSRP of $200-$249. While you can find some here and there near those prices, they usually go out of stock in hours. Average pricing is from $270 to $330 or even more on eBay. 8600, 8500, and 8400 series are pretty weak for any titles released in the last year or so, what with their paltry memory interfaces and neutered ROP counts. Especially if we are talking about playing at decent resolutions and AA/AF performance.

Soo…

The only sound and sensible bang-for-buck option would be 38xx series.

i agree that the 8800GTS 640/320 r bad deals rite now,, but the 8800GT!!!!!!HOW????in almost every benchmark i've seen its either rite beside the GTX or like 1-10FPS behind it, practically GTX performance for 249 is a damn good deal IMO, the 3870's r a decent deal rite now but i'd go with the 8800GT price/performance ration until the 3870s' prices drop.
