Art. Lebedev Exposes Touchscreen Concept Keyboard

Art. Lebedev Studio today prototyped a keyboard design that could stand in as a completely flexible display. The Optimus Tactus would improve on the yet to be shipped Maximus keyboard with touch input. Instead of an OLED screen built into every key, the Tactus would use one giant touchscreen that would not only permit keys to change in size and function, but would also allow features such as video playback overlay. As a matter of fact the release date for Tactus is set to be 01.01.2008, but the keyboard is still considered a concept and may not be released ever.

Do want.

Be great if you can save profiles to it, and have a button to swap them. ( so that you can take it to another PC, and it remembers the profiles)

It will type like shit. ie there are no buttons so you won't feel anything you press. It's like a notebook keyboard but worse.

There is a difference between soft-touch and no-touch. This would be like typing on a big goddamned iPhone.

i've used touchscreens before, but never for gaming. I think i can see a point there... but imagine these on laptops replacing the screen and keyboard in one :D miniputer ftw!

As some can see, I've used Touchscreen monitors before just to type on here... So with that in mind, I think it would be cool to try that out! and if you don't like it just RMA IT! lol. The design is something different, and with that, there will be people that like it or just hate it...

after thinking on it more, all i can think of is that you'd need to learn to type softer.
If you bash away like a madman on a typewriter, this wont work so well - but if you can get soft enough to just brush the keys (laptop or softer) then you wont have any issues.

The one thing I loved about when I was growing up is this... Once we got our first computer, my mom made us sit down and type on typing programs for a hour a day. I never really understood why until typing on a touchscreen. If you know the placement of the keys, then all is good! The faster I go, the softer I brush the keys. But, that is me, and I don't know of anyone else that is like that... But if you are around touchscreens and tablet Pcs everyday, then you wouldn't even notice the difference when it came to this or these keyboards... IMO that is

it certainly looks cool. if these became mainstream i doubt id want one, i get the impression that they'd be quite smudgy, u know lots of fingerprints and gunk left on them from usage.
as for typing on one of these, i think u'd have to look at the keyboard alot more due to not having a physical point of refrence whilst typing link on a proper 'buttond' keyboard, be it slim or not.
imho, the most suitable consumer for these are people with way too much cash to burn, who are desperate to show off how big their e-penises are

Yeah, you may be right, and maybe on the whole not knowing where the keys are. But, then there is also people who use tablet pc's all day long, or like for me, have to use a touch screen all day in order to post on here or do my own work... I think its them who will have the better time at this style of keyboard.
But nice thinking nun the less! :toast:

So I have to wonder what the price tag would be on it? Any ideas?:)

I'll believe it when I see it :)

Here's how the Maximus is coming along...
Originally promised to emerge in 2006 for the price of a good mobile phone, the final version of Optimus Maximus keyboard is now set to emerge in February 2008 at $1564, the price point of a high-performance office personal computer.

Yeah, don't get me wrong. This concept is awesome and it will serve several great purposes in the future, it just won't replace my desktop keyboard anytime soon.

+1 i guarantee the ppl that type fast will end up with like 4 words instead of a whole paragraph...amazing tech but the sensitivity would need to be turned up but that would even pose a problem because when i game my fingures are always on my keys...if i keep mine on that id be playing a game going all over the place and if i was like o ok ill just not rest my fingures on it then my reaction time would be crazy slow.
