Two Phenom II X4 Models Slated for January

AMD has reportedly slated two models of its Phenom II series processors for January, 2009. According to Greek website hwbox.gr, the company will be launching two high-end processors from the Phenom II X4 series, on the 9th of January. Details of these processors available at this point in time are:
  • AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition (HDZ940XCGIBOX), 3.00 GHz, Socket AM2+, 8 MB cache (2 MB total L2 + 6 MB L3), 125W TDP.
  • AMD Phenom II X4 920 (HDX920XCGIBOX), 2.80 GHz, Socket AM2+, 8 MB cache (2 MB total L2 + 6 MB L3), 125W TDP.
There is no word on the prices, at this point, though they are expected to be "much lower" than those of the Intel Core i7.

An AM3 chip will run on an AM2+ motherboard, the other way around looks impossible (expecting a current AM2+ chip to run on an AM3 motherboard.) The seggregation is not merely on the basis of socket and related memory support, it also involes a lot of electrical characteristics. Note how AMD is going to be giving disparity in the TDPs of equally clocked Phenom II AM2+ and AM3 variants.

So then the 940BE is going to be unable to work on AM3? That would be rather disappointing, as from what I saw I thought that was the highest clocked PII coming out, and it's time for ddr3.

btarunrYes. Phenom II come in AM2+ and AM3 flavours. These two are AM2+. AM3 ones are to be called xx5. eg: the AM3 equivalent for Phenom II 940 would be Phenom II 945.
i believe it was mentioned the AM3 socket will be xx5 or 945.

Which iirc none of those were clocked at 3ghz. :confused:

jan is already looking interesting. With Obama and Deneb coming, the changes to the world could turn it upside down. We'll see

Will Obama be running Deneb? Or will he rock it old school with some socket 939 action? The world awaits! :laugh:

He'll probably just have standard Core 2 dell in the Oval Office. :laugh:

He'll be running a unified AMtel processor, with Atidia GPU's manufactured 5 Km under the earth at Area-51 that the world will never know about, and there will be conspiracy theories for generations to come. These CPU's and GPU's will legends and talk of myths !

Or he'll talk about change, then move to a more centrist stance and use a E8400 with a HD4850, and a Nvidia card for PPU. Of course all of the parts in his system will only be manufactured in the USA.

The prices of q6600's have went up about £30 in the UK. If AMD can slide in one of these babies cheaper than that it will be a killer.

All I care about is if the 5gz+ and no cold bug rumors turn out to hold true for the retail chips :toast:

I haven't bought an AMD chip in years, since Core 2 came out. I'm getting excited about this one though :D

according to this slide at the bottom

www.techpowerup.com/img/08-11-16/30c.jpg

Green = AM2+ pkg -dark rose = Dragon
Purple= AM3 pkg -again dark rose=Dragon
Black= Am2 pkg - light rose =Spider plat form.

Highest PIIX4 will be the PIIx4 945 am3= 3.2 gig i think.And will have both ddr3 and ddr2 memory support.

If they overclock well on air, and perform similar to a Core2 or close to an I7, I will row back over to AMD:D

Dual DDR2 and DDR3 support makes for options which is good. If you dont like DDR3 prices now you can go with DDR2 on the cheap! With PIIX4 CPUs being cheaper already you have - a win - win situation,....FTW. Add OC to that and you have a real winner.

Even if Phenom II is even close in performance clock for clock against a core 2 quad, with the rumored overclocks...this is a winner. You also get a pretty nice choice of motherboards, for real nice prices, ones that clock well and support CF at least. SB750...lets see whats next :D

All I want to know is, will they score higher than i7 with both max clocked under DICE?
