SAPPHIRE Announces Environmentally Friendly Packaging

SAPPHIRE Technology, the leading manufacturer and world-wide supplier of AMD/ATI based graphics products is aware of the increasing awareness of the impact of excess packaging on the environment, and has an ongoing programme to play its part in conservation. In another industry first for SAPPHIRE, the company is now introducing paper pulp trays as the inner packaging for graphics cards. SAPPHIRE already offers its customers the option of 'Lite Retail' packaging - in which cards are shipped in a smaller display box with a basic bundle of essential cables and driver disc. This smaller size and weight reduces shipping costs for the customer and material waste both in manufacture and for the end user.

Outer boxes for SAPPHIRE products already use environmentally friendly inks and are completely recyclable. Now SAPPHIRE is introducing a new type of inner packaging for many of its mainstream models and looking to roll it out across the range.

In another industry first for SAPPHIRE, the company is introducing paper pulp trays. These are made from recycled paper materials and are further recyclable. Most of SAPPHIRE's graphics cards have previously shipped with an inner cardboard box - which in some cases have multiple folds and cut-outs to retain the cards and accessories. Now many of these can be replaced with the pulp tray which is moulded to hold the components safely during shipping. Work is ongoing to further develop this method and apply it to even the heavier models which currently ship in plastic carriers or foam packaging.

SAPPHIRE is committed to being environmentally friendly, and where existing package designs cannot be replaced by the new method, the company is specifying recycled materials wherever possible.

Great idea. Just include an option to get rid of the cd and the cables too! I know I don't need them supplied with my next card!

+1 to that :toast: drop the CD and all the accessories. Just put two DVI ports and an HDMI on the card and they're golden, no need for anything really.

Good news I guess. Always good to hear about companies going green as long as it doesn't raise prices for consumers. (going green can be very expensive.)

I think this basically means that they want to save some money in packaging - now they can just call it "eco-friendly" and do some pr.

Sapphire's packaging was pretty modest as is. Besides, if it is good for the environment and good for them, who are we to argue as long as our price doesn't change (or drops, but I doubt that one).

Those that need them can buy full retail, lite retail could be even lighter, or make ultra light with just card :)

Unless there's a HDMI-cable bundled, I don't need anything else, even stock cooler could go.

OMFG OEM cards.. no bundle no nothing. just the card and the DVI-VGA and the DVI-HDMI. i dont need more.why not?
as for the green package i dont really care as long as my card won't get damaged.
i can imagine ASUS wanting to do the same and and getting carried away. "sapphire has green packaging? well we have greener.. new packaing made of 100% recylced used toilet paper"

Now they've got to start making the cards biodegradable so when you upgrade you can just throw your old on in the flowerbed.

It's about time. I really hate those oversized boxes with abundant plastic/Styrofoam.

This is great,:).... but how much of a difference in weight will effect the shipping cost?
