You know as well as I do thats not how it works. The entire user base can chip in and really, who is doing who a favor here? I can go elsewhere and if you want to run on goodwill, you gotta listen to your audience.

One of the reasons Im here is because on the content itself W1zz does offer that. If the path of choice is having both streams of income... we run into a problem, as you can see.
TPU is a business, like it or not, people pay huge sums of money (I guess huge may be a bit much) for that ad space!

Great so the patreon was clearly not required then. Good to know.

I never said it did not matter, and I do not speak officially for what w1zz does. I am just widening the view here.

That's a rather dubious argument. Running intensive benchmarks, or the latest games on powerful, power hungry PCs also consumes lots of energy. Is that morally reprehensible too? Of course not. Neither activity is reprehensible.

i recently saw a chart showing showing electricity use for various activities gaming came in far higher than crypto mining..

Yes, audience relevancy is very important for high conversion rates and low cost per lead. That is exactly how marketing 101 works.

Well I don't have a problem with ads here, the only thing that really triggered me was the in mining ad and the warning that I received for posting in the wrong thread. Technically the warning is right because it simply was the wrong topic but the thread about the nicehash ad was closed and so there was no option to post in the appropriate thread.

Also, I am just a newbie here :p

I think you are defending and dodging, tbh.
Sorry, was mobile. Now that I am sitting, let me get into detail.

My reality stems from working with a "well known" (some may argue that) website for just a bit over a decade now.
The things I see are ever increasing as to the costs a site can run into.

It could be simple things like reviewer compensation...
Hosting and whatever fees come with doing so....

Then as you get bigger, you might look into hiring a coder to make the site faster, you might hire an SEO guy to make you more readily accessible. Things do cost, and those costs stack up.

Ads pay for these things.

We do have a mining section, I do not see the reason for hate for an add on the home page, it goes along with what we do here. Most of you live in the forums anyways. I will agree that the color was....bright...eye grabbing....makes for cranky pants first thing in the morning.

W1zzards Patreon is set up to help with the former, but along with the support came some bonuses as well. While supporting W1zzard does put your voice on a higher level, unlike some in this thread, they feel like they are his boss (may not even be supporters with said mentality).

As my original post in this thread was intended.... Give the guy a break, and politely ask the guy to consider a change. All of the hate and rage is overkill!
I would have to imagine that this ad will likely run its course, I guess it has been paid for already, so we are really discussing future ads at this point.

What is wrong with a PM to w1zz or a thread here....

Bro, I know its your place and all, but my business took a hit....I cant get my GPU....whatever your side of the story is, and come at him like a human. Have some compassion knowing W1zzard is not out roaming the internet trying to piss everyone off on an individual level. This is the same guy that plays April fools pranks, hides messages in GPU reviews, and reviews "special" technology bits for some holidays.

As was said about mods. All of us here = humans. Let's just try to be the better humans ;)

AGAIN: this is not the word of TPU/W1zzard or any others tied to this site. All is just the opinion of a guy sitting on this side of a keyboard.

Can certainly get into that, almost entirely even. And I'll be the last trying to boss the W1zz around, like you say, his business. But I think deep down the fallout these ads generate - and the keysite ads are of a similar nature - is more costly than the one-time income boost.

These things inspire ad blockers. They inspire a general lowering of standards. And they tell a tiny little story about what TPU thinks is right and what is not. Imagine if you had a warez website ad on the frontpage next. Still okay? Porn? When is a line being crossed? I hear there's good money in browser miners too. Stuff like this is damaging to overall trust because you're quite simply moving onto the slippery slope.

I think its quite simply, you are either considering ethics or you're just all about income first and foremost. Its a little thing that's meh among many other things that are good here, but the problem is, trust and fanbase is hard to gain, and very easy to lose.

This topic is a warning shot before losing the actual fanbase, which is why I said 'who really benefits'. The short term money might deliver long term damage, much like crypto itself.

In the same tone, let us continue on this path.

You open your reply with the assumption that W1zzard sits in a room where ads are tossed at him wildly, and he just clicks a checkbox and takes the money. It isnt exactly how that all goes down.

Now again, this is me talking. I feel, if I were W1zz, I'd look at things like this. OK, so XYZ says I got so much for a specific length of time, to help offset the fact of charging members to view anything...right? My assumptions continue to see W1zz being like, *shrugs* we mine, people ask me to put mining back in reviews....add for mining, give it a run. It is possible that the connection was not made until it was brought up...us=human thing ;)

Now, as the feces has hit the spinning blades above. He can reflect on his trial as maybe being in error, and may change his path in the future. Then again, I could be way off the mark too. But I think I'm closer to reality than not ;)

Good morning TPU, and what are we offended by today? /s <--I'll be using this alot, I assume...

I have sat and watched all of this devolve into chimps flinging poo.

I will not directly quote anyone, but if this post feels like its pointed at you, it likely is.

I myself have kept a very nebulous role here at TPU for many reasons, which is why I have lurked here under various pseudonym for the better part of a decade and a half.

Point One:
TPU is a business, and advertisements bring in money, some serious money at that. For those of you who think that the paltry sum coming from Patreon is enough to operate this, may want to revisit basic economics classes. also please point me to that hosting service that would charge such an insignificant sum... i will literally buy them out. <--- Yes, i am using literally properly in this case.

Sidebar:
You are free to consume content or join a community anywhere you please, but as I stated above, I have been around the industry for quite a long time (since the 80's/90s). This is one of the most open and forgiving forums on the web, and i would love to see you rail on another forum/namesake and still be there in the morning. W1zz is an awesome dude and a personal friend over the past decade+ of my life.

Just because you pay to "support" the site does not mean you man the helm, the business still needs to run; The same way you can be a Patreon to a Tech Tuber, and I guarantee they will not let you flip tables and try to control their content.

Point Two:
Nicehash, is NOT in any way shape or form the reason for the GPU shortage. If you wanna know the truth about how mining is hurting the industry you really need to look at the larger distributed pools of Etherium mining/miners this is where the GPUs are most efficient and most are applied related to mining. Nicehash's most profitable algo is Etherium, but miners only make 90% of what they would make mining for a distributed pool such as Ethermine/Nanopool/etc.

Sidebar:
Now that you know Nicehash is not the culprit for making GPUs scarce (we will dig into that shortly), but whats your excuse for the farce outrage? I am sure many of you will glance past logic due to your need to take up pitchforks, but I digress.

Point Three:
For those of you making vast assumptions about the GPU shortage should really educate yourselves on the global economy of scale especially related to silicon. It is not just GPU availability that is suffering, it is lack of availability across the board which is impacting GPUs. Im sure some of you have heard, at least I hope, that vehicle (yes cars) production is on hold in many ways due to lack of availability of the silicon based parts they need for the vehicles. Mind you that is just one part of a very convoluted supply chain. But you also have on top of this increased reliance on silicon for everything from new phones coming out every damn year, to smart watches, digital cameras, and virtually anything else with the ability to work electronically. Add to this that we all have seen how the pandemic which has impacted several things globally and foundries are not agnostic to this effect as well.

Sidebar:
Damn, People must be using their cars, phones and even smart thermostats for mining on nicehash as well :banghead: /s

P.S.:
I know this will further likely inflame many of you who want so badly to hold up these pitchforks and have a reason to be offended. However im not here to make your feels get better, im here to provide logic and truth to the discussion.

P.S. Sidebar:
Please find something better to do with your time, being offended by an advert is silly and nonsensical.

If you want someone/something to be mad at, lets all pick up pitchforks against the robo dialers offering me vehicle warranty 3+ times a day.

For those of you who took the time to read the information I am offering, thank you and I hope it helped broaden your understanding of what is happening presently in the marketplace. If you are still pissy about the advert, and TPU offering you a community free of charge, well I got nothing for ya...

Be well.

We'll find common ground if we say 'this was a pilot'. I can get into that. Fire the test rocket. See response. Well here it is.

What doesn't work however is then closing topics with feedback on that test rocket, but I'm glad to see the flexible path was chosen in that regard. It speaks for TPU and its mods, that.

But here's another approach. Use that frontpage poll to fire test rockets before firing an actual rocket. If a choice is a choice, so be it. But that's not how they're presented. Some massaging might help. It took a few topics for the users on TPU to get some sort of peace of mind around those keysite ads too. People want to know 'why' and I do think W1zz has gained enough sympathy to be able to defend choices even if we don't entirely agree on all of them. That's the credit he's built. So why not use it BEFORE the shit hits the fan?

I cannot say anything for the way in which it was handled, especially for one in this thread to now seems to be more or less fine with how it all went down. TBH, that could have been my fault for linking back to the post prior to the start of this thread.

True that! But maybe out of the topic behind those polls, you could distill what sort of ads would be acceptable and what would cause issues.

Its being done for refining the reviewed content, why not for advertising? This is an overall misfire when it comes to advertising. Sticking stuff in your face you never wanted to see. Its the reason so many people run adblockers, which result in zero profit.

That nicehash ad doesn't bother me at all. It's completely static* and I don't think it's my place or anyone else's to moralise about how worthy it is to have on this site. It's a legal product and earns money for TPU which helps to keep TPU up and running... so that we can bitch about the ad. The irony may be strong with this one. ;)

However, that ghastly yellow colour is another story. It should be illegal and @W1zzard thrown in jail at once! But seriously, if the awful colour is the only thing to complain about it, then that's no complaint at all. The ad will eventually go away and you won't have to look at it again.

*I really hate any kind of advert animation as I find it so distracting and I've mentioned that in previous feedback that I'd really appreciate static ads. And guess what, W1z listened to me and others on this and got us a static ad. You can be sure that animated ones would earn TPU more money, so that's a big favour he's doing us. I'm very grateful for this and make a point of switching off my ad blocker on TPU in return.

Just saying:
Although my thoughts may differ to an extent from others this is what I have seen, noted and just honestly believe.
I've made it clear many times before I'm not a fan of crypto.

I'm aware of the apparent "Bad" uses it has for nefaroius things such as money laundering, hiding funds and such.
Miners buying mass quantities of cards isn't helping either, affecting availability and pricing too and yes, it's real because it happened not very long ago.
Not affecting prices as badly as all the scalpers/flippers have been done now..... And those guys certainly aren't helping anyone but themselves.

BTW, way back in the day (2009-2010) I had a chance to get in on it, even had a board with 4 PCI-E slots and some GPUs that could have started earning me a literal fortune in it by now. However after looking into it from many different angles, I didn't like the sound of it then and still don't now.

From what I've seen it contributes nothing of any material value, being it actually consumes for the sake of itself - And ultimately it's just data in the end.

However..... With all that being said:
This is still W1zzard's site and he's free to do as he wants like everyone else, no approval required from any of it's members.

End of story.

I already know I'll catch some flak over this and understand already, I really don't care.
Too many different opinions from too many people with their own unique "Wants" and Needs" for me to worry over so I don't.

If this were my site, I already know anything I'd do some woudn't like so it's not a matter of pleasing everyone because you can't please everyone, it's just not possible to do.
Instead it's do what's best for you, as you will for what pleases you and let all the rest get over it already.
In other words, worry about what's best for #1 (You) do as you need and to hell with the rest if you must.

Look guys, I don't "Like" what I'm seeing concerning such ads but at the same time I respect his right to do it if he wants....
And also respect his right to bear any consequences over it if such should occur to either side, good or bad (Hopefully all good).

Realize TPU is not a catering service but if your one of those that really needs all that for your life, be sure to order alot of extra napkins too:
You're gonna need 'em for all the useless "Boo-Hoo" bitchin and crying over it - For whatever good it's (NOT) gonna do.
~Enjoy. :)

Be well.
PS Part Deux:

I didn't even get into the topic of scalpers as they make me sick... But beyond the silicon issues those are the people you should be pissed at...

Now if TPU were to run an advert for a bot to buy GPUs, so you could scalp them... Then, I would be right along side you pulling up a pitchfork.

Alas, I do not see W1zz or the advertising staff approving such things, so once again... Please let us find something better to spend our gray matter on.

Be well... V2

I said something along these lines in the forum issues thread previously, but deleted it as it was off topic, along with all the other posts going on about this.

I'm afraid that I missed all that hateful discussion about moving ads. Dunno why people have to be hateful about it, but the internet seems to bring that out aplenty, alas.
