.I love it but the truth is 12900 is hot and eats watts more than any Intel/AMD CPU I owned over the last couple years.
Because no other CPU you owned was running at 5.6 ghz. Try a 5950x at 5.6ghz and come back to tell me how much it consumes..

Good luck with a 5950x @ 5.6Ghz

Good luck running anything @5.6Ghz all core on ambient. Realistically 5.4~5.5 is where Alder Lake settles with really good cooling.

Hmmm a PC game doing 186W on one of my 12900K CPU's .I love it but the truth is 12900 is hot and eats watts more than any Intel/AMD CPU I owned over the last couple years.
2600X/3600X/3600XT/3800X/3800XT/5600X/5800X/10850K although the 10850K could hit 300+watts.

Blows my mind with some comments from a few people in the comments.

Video where the screen shot is from

And that is with your CPU OC'd to 5.58GHZ on the Pcores. 186w is not bad with that voltage and OC. Supports the point I was trying to make actually. Thank You for showing a good example!
To be clear though at 4900Mhz I still got the same FPS on 12900K
If you're hitting the performance ceiling, you really don't need the OC.

I think what's matters is the performance you get per watt (or dollar), if it does 6Ghz or not it's just technicall stuff. If another CPU can do the same with less wattage then it sucks, if not good for him.

That is a narrow way of thinking. Does the CPU in question render the best performance? Does it provide the functionality desired? In the case of the 12700k, the answer is yes. The differences on power used for a such a high end part compared to other highend CPUs is rather trivial. We're not talking about CPU's for mobile platforms where performance per watt is a chief concern. We're talking about highend Desktop platforms were performance is the chief concern.

i did wrote "if another cpu can do the same..." so i guess it was clear i was comparing performance per watt in identical workloads, not the performance per watt of a celeron and a 12900K.

People running a highend Desktop should not really be whining about power use.

Depends were you live i guess, electricity is really expensive were i live. If i can do the same and spend less i prefer not to waste money
I know in places like the US people don't even consider that because gas and electricity is dirt cheap

Well if you are gaming and you care about power consumption, you should get an alderlake cause it is WAY more efficient than ryzen's. If you are working then frankly it shouldn't really matter, both the 5950x and the 12900k are extremely efficient (with the correct power limits), you are supposed to be getting paid by your work, if that 2-3€ difference of electricity per month shouldn't make or break you. Or if it does, find a better job I guess

Chipzilla has always led the industry with innovations, big.LITTLE is no exception.
Big little is indeed no exception, Arm did it first ,proved it etc Soo, I wouldn't shout about Intel's innovation on that point personally.
There's little innovation in fact here.
AL is good don't get me wrong I just disagree it's innovative.
Copying isn't leading.

if you see i was actually not defending either, just saying i would choose the one that did the same for less wattage.

Power = heat = noise.

I do like silence and lower power components are enablers, while inefficient high power is not.

I have 6 fans in my PC, 3 120 on top rad, two 140 on bottom, 1 120 on the back and can hardly hear it. Just because you have a highend desktop does not mean it needs to sound like a jet engine.

It doesnt have to, Im saying, lower power / higher efficiency means you can reduce noise further, maybe even cool passively, whereas with inefficient components that is going to get more difficult.

This difficulty results in higher cost of cooling solutions, higher space requirements, and more heat dumped in a room. So I think these are all very good reasons to prefer efficiency over inefficiency. Ergo, power matters.

Well in winter in the UK, my PC can dump as much heat as it wants into my room. It is 7c outside atm, maybe lower with wind.

Yep and if you live in another country your airconditioner is on 24/7 to keep cool. But even in a well isolated house and a small sized man cave, those 400 watts of exhaust heat can get you sweaty.

doubt my PC will ever exhaust 400 watts, not unless i care about benchmarks, which i don't really. Gaming, films/vids/music/browsing Which is not going to push my 12700k no where near 400 watts. Shame as it means my room is not so warm. Maybe i need to crack out some balls to the wall benches to warm myself up :p

I agree on the heat dumping in the UK, but I don't think your situation and mine is the only perspective on it.
And my 12 fan pc is fairly quiet at full load 24/7, but I don't count idle noise as a worthy point to mention personally, as in any standpoint on a personal pc noise output should be at load for an hour, all PC's should be quite at idle you know.

I'd recommend folding at home and WCG for a nice comfortable room :) :D

A pc should never get noisy. Having to crack the fans so high that they start being noisy means there is inadequate airflow. Usually fans are completely silent below 1000 rpm, and you shouldn't need more than that unless you are like benching.

Personally i don't mind a little noise, im more concerned about temps, so my fractal torrent gets a little bit noisy but its exhausting 600+ watts during gaming. Although it keeps my 3090 at 65 degrees while doing it. I can make it absolutely quiet but then the gpu temps will go 70

Good thing with a water loop is, the CPU and GPU are not dumping their heat into the case, but it is getting exhausted from the radiators

Yeah, I always felt that watercooling should either be done on both or not at all.
