I chuckle every time I hear this, especially from people that didn't buy them. I run my 3080 at 4k and it's excellent, not once yet have I had to run textures on anything less than their highest settings, texture packs from AMD sponsored titles not withstanding.

I will forever remember my launch day 3080 as the GOAT of this generation, getting one day 1 at MSRP has made it a unicorn, and it continues to crush games over 2 years later at 4k. I banked on a particular feature set being more relevant to me, and I can tell you it wasn't extra VRAM.

Everyone makes their own decision, you've been vocal about not making this one, but every day that passes I am happier I got a 3080 over a 6800XT or 6900XT, just as I'm sure for other buyers with different needs, they would be very happy they chose the opposite.

Call it not a true 4k card as much as you like, those words cannot take away from my excellent 4k gaming experience this card continues to enable.

I'll say it again, Launch day MSRP 3080 is GOAT of Ampere / RDNA2 gen, and nothing anyone can tell me on a forum can change my qualified ownership experience derived opinion.

But historically they sold really well, and despite the mining frenzy history also tells us they feature far more heavily on the Steam Hardware & Software Survey than the apparently better priced competition. So pricing can't have been all that bad.... historically.

But I disagree on the last point, it's an RTX card and quite capable of RT if you are wise with settings selection, not many cards are a "set all dials to 11 and enjoy" type situation, hell that can crumble a 4090 in some situations.

I only have a 3070 Ti and mostly play at 3840x2160, but sometimes I will dip down to 2160x1440.

But it is remembered as an utterly underpowered card. Some would argue it's too underpowered to be remembered.
But, being one who can tolerate some lowish framerate, after I typed that /s comment I ironically believed that at least NVIDIA half-heartedly tried to make RT mainstream with 2060.

If oneday, some future card (maybe a 4050) with a launch price and popularity like the 1060 or 1650 can comfortably run 1080p with RT stuff at okay fps then it may claim the 'historic' place.

To me the card is enthusiast mainstream and I'm sure they'll sell by the truckload even with this pricing after the 7900 reviews.

People can wax on all they want they want the 4080 is not a legendary card and neither is the 3080. If the 3080 was so good then why the 3080TI, weeks later. The most legendary card that Nvidia has made for consumers must be the 2080TI. There was nothing that competed with that card. The 2080TI was the benchmark for RDNA2 and the 3070+ series cards. As much as people like to wax on about RT and call Gaming Rasterization it was beaten into everyone's brain by even TPU that the 2080TI was a unicorn and that word only came into existence in the space when AMD caught up to and passed the performance of the 2080TI. There is a tremendous amount of Penis envy without a lot of context. When I got a good enough job to have money to spend on PC parts I started budget and as my earnings increased so did my equipment's performance. The GTS450 was the budget card at the time and I was blown away when the same $99 gave me the 6800. It was even better when I got a 7950 for $299 and got another one one clearance for $249. With that rig my 1440P panel run totally by the GPU sang and it was sweet seeing with my eyes the same screens I saw in Magazines. The Vega 64 was next and Nvidia were genuinely scared so they made a no holds barred card named what? The 2080TI. Watch Youtube videos and you will see that the 2080TI got more love than the 4090 and even went through the burning card issue with no pain. However the 6600 is now $269 and excellent value for money. BTW that is all in Canadian dollars.

It is unfortunate that Nvidia's influence is so entrenched in mind share that there was a thread on TPU where a moderator jumped in and berated people for making fun of Nvidia. Even though AMD stated the the 4080 is the competitior to the XTX the narrative is still the 4090 and there are plenty of "press" that will sing about the 4080 but in the same breath question the price of the XTX. It is so strong that people are readily capable of blaming AMD for issues that Nvidia creates like MSRP. It is like how all the people with older cards like the 2080TI get more incentive to enjoy their cards from AMD than the very company that made them. As far as I am concerned Nvidia is so intoxicated by the fumes of their conceit that they now openly are totally apathetic to their most ardent fans. The 4090 IS that Fast but anything below it is AMD's to take as they want you to forget that an entire PC with 85% of the performance can be bought for the same money.

In another universe it would be 2025 and the 6800XT would be the highest AMD card on Steam charts as when it falls to $200 US by 2024 will become the budget king with console ports and the open world software support taking RDNA2 into the sunset beautifully.

37 weeks is 'weeks later' lol, I find this a particularly misrepresentative way of saying it, next time you could go even further and say days later, given we can still measure by days, the amount would just be high (259 days).

And the reason it was even launched in the first place is because they wanted a bigger slice of the profits, mere 'weeks' after launch when the 3080 10GB was going for over $1200 USD anyway, they felt compelled to take a bigger slice of the cut, it wasn't launched specifically because the OG had 10GB.

Turns out the 3080 10GB was so good, they refreshed the 3080 to price it higher.

It was only Rebadged as the R9 280X, the R9 285 was a different chip and later became the R9 380/380X. If you find a 6G 280X its a rare card lol.

After all, consumers are paying out of pocket to reduce the costs of game developers, where the games now being created won't need extra time for pre-defined lighting. Whether this saved time and cost of consumables has reduced the cost of buying a copy of the games, I think not. After all, RT is something that takes a higher price from end customers for the benefit of the game developers and of course for the benefit of the hardware companies who have an even higher margin. Also has more benefits to PSU makers and electricity traders because high power consumption.

There's nothing mainstream about a $1,200 graphics card. Accepting this price as mainstream is the kind of thinking that's been sinking the industry deeper and deeper into monopoly status. If you like yours, good for you. It's still the equivalent of a Lamborghini, though.
