Finished the deep rock season 3 pass, season 4 is a few weeks away. Will be getting into w40k bolt action this weekend, and in july is R&C: rift apart.

Some surprising releases this year.

ran a few tests on my gtx 1070 i cleaned up recently, once oc'd the cpu/gpu i am pulling in only 55 watts on cpu (limited speeds) and 150 watts on the 1070, I didn't realize the 1070 used such little wattage.

anyways.

deus ex human revolution: 165 fps 165hz, rock solid at 1080p.

dishonored 2 will fluctuate between 100-140 fps fully maxed out at 1080p.

windows 11 seems to have given everything a boost... I am impressed by these numbers. i didn't realize a 1070 was so powerful.

i am tempted to plug in my 1440p monitor again, i wasn't expecting this performance level. i think 1070 will get kneecapped a bit at 1440p though we will see.

also after gaming some more on this 23.8" 1080p, I am convinced 27" 1440p is the sweet spot for gaming still.

its not terrible by any means, but I do miss that extra sharpness. funny that that density of the Steam Deck screen makes 800p also seem somewhat sharper than 23.8" 1080p. not sure what the PPI is for both, too lazy to look it up.

32" 4k OLED is 100% going to be my next monitor. just got to wait another year or two for that to come out.

this is me installing Dishonored 2 earlier this evening, GoG advertising some of its games on the install screen - and one of my fav games of all time from 2001 I think, Stronghold HD popped up. damn those were the good days. i was like 12 or 13 years old building castle after castle, fuck it was amazing. i still play it sometimes, it holds up well and scales with a 1440p monitor nicely.

mad respect to GoG for having this be one of the games that popped up. @lexluthermiester

do you have any stuttering or low frame drops in Origins? I had this problem in the past and it was immersion breaking so I gave up on it.

No. Although I never had many frames to start with on the computer I was using. Only if I was using iGPU was it stuttering, but that was due to single-digit frame rate.

Well yea it opens too late for me at night so I'm just gonna watch a movie/drink some wine and then I'm off to sleep and try to wake up early in the morning and start my journey/Sorc. 'luckily I also don't have to work for a few days or maybe a week even since I've finished all of my job eariler than my deadlines'
This is what I have in my launcher:

I won't be gone tho, I will leave updates or open a separate topic if anyone interested in some of my experience or whatever. I won't be spoiling the story ofc but I'm also going for the end game like I always do in such games and that I will be more than happy to share.:)

Not at all, and i used DXVK only to pass this few moments i had CTDs, looks like beginning is buggy since i couldn't use the bird but now i can without CTD.

All of it is buggy. Senu, swimming, or meditating can cause crashing or freezing, except with a specific version of the Nvidia driver.

Radeon users shouldn't have any issues.

THIS TEAM. Absolutely crazy good. Much like the game... they nailed it again, even if the formula is a bit different... the combat is once again fantastic. The introduction of Paths as a sort of Specialization for your class is brilliant, both as a guide to push you towards a build/skill set and to really push party composition to the next level.

if you want to break the game - at least a good part of it, this is my best allround team compo thus far. It just won't die and the synergy is perfect. It also works without the paths included under the spoiler, just unlock Occultist and Vestal and you're off.

Vestal Seraph on 4; hits any rank, with one Consecration, Divine Grace, Mantra, Judgement and Sanctuary, she can stress heal, protect someone at death's door, and has two huge spot heals.
Occultist Warlock on 3; hits any rank, Abyssal Artillery and Stab are primary, once you unlock The Burning Stars you've got a huge nuke and prior to that you can spam combo tokens around, of which everyone except Vestal can extract major benefits. MAA can get a heal out of it which is a perfect match with Retribution/Ripostes; Occultist itself gets the nuke more easily, and Highwayman can stun with Pistol Shot.
Highwayman Sharpshot on 2; - hits any rank, and Point Blank Shot is Ranged so you can near-oneshot most rank 1 mobs after advancing forward
ManAtArms Vanguard on 1; hits R1-3 reliably with Crush, can rearrange the party with either Hold the Line or Rampart, and primarily uses Retribution for two attacks per round.

It all gets even better with a Consecration of Light on position 1; either Highwayman or MAA gets that sweet 50% attack dmg boost; on a Point Blank Shot you'll go over 20 damage with no trouble and Crush will reliably go over 10. When Consecration is nearly out (it lasts 5 turns w Seraph) you can use Mantra for a 30~50% spot heal on MAA to recover from all his taunting with Retribution. Divine Grace only really sees use as a heal in the hardest of fights. So practically; the party has excellent crowd control and rank management, almost everyone can reliably and repeatedly hit ranks 1-4; Occultist and Highwayman don't mind swapping places too much either when you get shuffled; they can always deal damage. And between MAA's Bolster and Seraph's Sanctuary you have a huge amount of stress healing. We're also NOT wasting a single turn on little heals, condition (bleed/flame etc) or debuff removals for the party, or even setting up a target with debuffs to prepare it for a big hit - any preparation like combo tokens is included in a damage skill one way or another, and we just heal straight past any damage over time with no trouble.

Occultist was my last puzzle piece and top for pos 3 after playing with this compo with a Grave Robber, Jester, Runaway and a Plague Doctor for pos 3 instead. They all lacked something or just didn't synergize too well. But Occultist throws out combo tokens so easily, and that's really a major strong suit in DD2 for lots of classes. Last, I think if any changes would be made, Highwayman would go out for another damage dealer, I just can't figure out what's really going to top his versatility and dmg potential; perhaps Grave Robber can get near him, as it benefits massively from combo tokens with a crit boost, and she can also be self sufficient, move ranks forward and reliably hit most ranks; Lunge is very powerful - it just lacks the rank 1-2 shuffle beauty that MAA and Highwayman can do, exchanging shield slams and point blank shots - which they apparently also LOVE to do, because every time I combine them that way, I get positive relationship points plus nice one liner :) Sometimes even a stress heal..

Darkest Dungeon II_2023_06_01_00_53_56_132.jpg

That moment when you get positive relationship high enough to create friendships in the party and skills get their unique boosts... the game is at its best. Characters will step in randomly on attacks too, making for beautiful one-two hit animations that really get your spirit up. I've also had many clutch moments in the harder fights, the first time I killed above boss it was with a single character left at 3 HP, after surviving solo at death's door for half a turn, AND getting a Meltdown on top of it. Every time it would get struck I was like NOOOoooo and then finally got to chisel away the last few hit points after all :D

I'm also pleasantly surprised by how friendly the game is on your time. An expedition is a couple of hours, to multiple hours, but rarely more than you could finish in a good evening's play. Unlocks happen pretty quickly after the initial few expeditions where you inevitably fail; and then you're really left with lots of ways to approach the game in earnest. I went the path of rapidly unlocking my favorite compo by farming Hero Shrines above all else and then it just happened that I could finish the first act along the way. But you can also choose to make the game harder on yourself in lots of ways - or easier by carrying a Radiant Flame on your coach. Its nothing at all like Darkest Dungeon 1 which was a massive time sink only to gain a great levelled and geared up team to lose them in a single bad moment. That hardcore-default mode is out definitively. What's still in, is the infinite amount of times you get surprised by the game's brilliance in bringing peril to your run. Most sophisticated RNG ever :)

Found it on Reddit somewhere, it was a pretty old one. 435 or thereabouts.

I was running a laptop Quadro at that point, so I was stuck with whatever driver Windows felt that I should have.

535.98 looks not bad, idk if driver update fixed Senu to CTD each time i called him when 531.41 was instealled... it was verry beginning of the game too.

I see some gliches with character legs, when in stairs.

//

DXVK fixes all too, but no HDR for DX11.

Hm. Interesting. Never seen the stairs issue.

Most of the issues I was having was with swimming underwater and meditating, not Senu.

Rumored to be working:

I've been waiting for years for Nintendo to bring back Advance Wars. They finally have and its great!

Wargroove (Chucklefish's homage to Adv. Wars) was really good too a few years ago. But there's nothing quite like playing the original. Cartoon-war with cartoon graphics means that kids can watch and you don't really have to feel too bad. Its about tactical play of these units: bazookas vs tanks, tanks vs artillery, missiles vs battleships, fighters vs bombers, helicopters vs landers, submarines and cruisers.

Adv. Wars always was one of Nintendo's deepest strategy games. Albeit with the classic "Nintendo Bullshit" you get (See Mario Kart's "Blue Shell"), Adv. Wars also has the Commander Powers which are completely bonkers and overpowered. Still, its nice to have a "super-move" to do every now and then and push the tactical line as a stalemate condition comes up. It helps make sure the game moves forward, either for you... or for the opponent. Planning around your own (and the opponents) CO abilities is a major part of the tactics and strategy. (Without commander abilities, I bet that these games would become trench-warfare / defensive no-mans lands. So its a necessary evil)

The AI doesn't feel quite as strong as it used to, but maybe as an adult I'm just better at playing this game. Still, the AI takes advantage of its Commander Powers, and the maps are well designed to force the player to learn how to use all the units (and how to take advantage of your own commander's unique powers to turn the tide of battle). IMO, this is one of those "hidden gems", and I highly recommend people play it.

----------

Shoutouts to Chucklefish's "Wargroove" for satisfying my Adv. Wars itch until now. I'll probably get a few more rounds of Wargroove in. Competition in this highly tactical style of turn-based strategy is ... a good thing. Wargroove commanders are no where near the "overpowered" feel that Adv. Wars commanders were, so there's a feeling of more PvP balance in Wargroove. I dunno, I'll have to play both and think about the differences again. But both games are great.

1685656726431.png

Above: Wargroove, an obvious homage to Adv. Wars. Though there are differences in how various details have been implemented, both games are excellent.

Ex: one of the strongest Wargroove commander abilities is: "Buy a unit at 2x the price right now", which is... really good mind you. So if a unit normally is 500, you can buy it immediately for 1000, and it can move on the same turn. (Since it teleports to the front line, its hard for opponents to plan around and well worth the double-gold cost).

Meanwhile, Eagle in Adv. Wars is sitting there with "All my units can take a 2nd turn, during my turn", with a commander ability far more powerful than anything in Wargroove. And the Adv. Wars community is all "Ehhh... kind of mid tier actually".

Wars community is all "Ehhh... kind of mid tier actually".

tactics ogre was my favorite game in this genre. there was one other one too, but I can't remember the name of it. :(

thanks for sharing this, I have been considering getting Wargroove to play on my Steam Deck. seems like its more balanced than Advance Wars if I read that right.

Well, Advance Wars Reboot-camp is a remake of Adv. Wars 1 (which was very unbalanced), and Adv. Wars 2 (which fixes the worst balance issues). But there was Adv. Wars Dual Strike (DS for the Nintendo dual-screen days) and "Days of Ruin", each of which balanced the game further. Nintendo is remaking the original, so we're back to Adv. Wars 1 (unbalanced) and Advance Wars 2 (less unbalanced) here. Wargroove on the other hand was made after Days of Ruin, so it was taking advantage of all the little balance changes over the decades and improved the balance slightly more.

So in many ways, "Advance Wars: Reboot Camp" is a nostalgia game. To bring us back to the first game, as unbalanced as it is by today's standards. Its still perfectly fine in campaign mode mind you, the game's campaign is designed around the imbalance, so to speak. Whenever you have Max (considered the strongest commander), you're often in chokepoints where you can't take advantage of Max's brokenness in Adv. Wars 1. Its only really an issue in PvP play.

But in PvP play, stronger commanders vs weaker commanders is a mild way to implement handicap. Weaker players can choose stronger commanders, and stronger players can choose weaker commanders to help even the odds in a handicap game. Its not like Eagle or Andy are "bad" in any case.

For an even match, both players choosing a mid-tier commander is largely considered to be balanced. (Eagle vs Andy, for example).

So I'd call Adv. Wars more "swingy". The commander abilities are extremely powerful, designed to smash through any potential stalemate and force a winner in a situation. Meanwhile, Wargroove's erm... "Groove" (basically the game's version of a commander ability) are also abilities to help smash through stalemates, but not nearly with the same level of force as Adv. Wars has. So overall, I'd call Adv. Wars a far more aggressive game, where the offense (especially with a commander ability power behind it) has the advantage.

While offense vs defense is more balanced in Wargroove, leading to potentially longer games and more stalemates.

Neither is a bad thing. There's a tradeoff involved in "buffing offense" vs "buffing defense", so to speak. Ultimately, both games just play out very differently due to this difference in commander abilities. I'm personally more used to Wargroove since that's what I played most recently. I've forgotten how crazy strong the abilities were in these first games.
