yep I keep my personal stuff in corner of my desktop, and work stuff in my taskbar, that way I don't get them mixed up when zooming.

but when i go idle to go fix my lunch or w.e, i come back click on personal icon on desktop like magic arena to play a game, it takes like 10 seconds before it will let me click on it.

its fucking infuriating.

Makes no fucking sense, it annoys shit out of me.

This one has been bugging me when I boot into windows 11 lately yeah. I think it's related to the "mouse polling optimizations" they did, but like billy, if I can't click things it's not a good optimization...

Because your hard drives have idled and thats how long they take to wake up

I have an external hdd in a usb slot in caddy, so could be that doing it in my case.

Absolutely, the insane delay is why i have my externals on a powered hub and disconnect it from the PC unless i'm actively using them - they can cause a 5 second system freeze each, and tend to stagger spin up so more drives takes longer.

Would it be worth not having the drive power down? would it harm the drive. My caddy has a power switch so i can turn it off to switch the hdd that is slotted in it.

My spell check/autocorrect is broken.. it is enabled.. Funny thing is, it has to be a setting or something because its been like this for 3 installs. But it works fine on my other rig. Almost ready to buy a new key lol..

Any ideas on how to fix it?

After installing both 10 and 11 dual boot and trying them, my conclusion is windows 10 is better. Had 11 on for one day and already had errors with it, and had none with win 10.

Not likely. Modern HDDs are rated for millions of hours of operation before first expected failure. Power-up/Spin-up cycles are more likely to cause wear than just keeping the drive running while the PC is on. I've been doing this since 2008ish and have not experienced any problems with my drives.

Yuppers. Windows management settings generally. Set your drive sleep times to "0" which is the same as telling Windows to never put the drive to sleep.

This is my personal setting;

240minutes is a setting that, for me, strikes the best balance of performance for my use case.

EDIT: I do use HDDs but not on this system, the NAS is chock full of Ultrastars...

Do the drives in the NAS not sleep, or is that controlled by the NAS controller?

Well I've disabled all the APM and similar on them so I really doubt they are sleeping. And yeah that would depend on the OS on the NAS, not the clients.

the power switch stops the issue entirely
The problem is modern drives have their own internal sleep timers to be 'green' and this ignores windows settings

windows staggers wakeup to stop power surges (for enterprise, originally) but that slows the whole procedure down

If you have a CD/DVD drive still, you get the same freeze ejecting a disk

That depends on the drive and is a setting that can generally be disabled using the manufacturer utilities.
